With its classic Nahe lines of apricot and pear with some underlying earthy minerality, this wine is in amazingly fine shape.

It has certainly evolved brilliantly in the bottle and presents a lovely and versatile beverage for current ‘applications’ including as a killer foil for a number of Asian dishes.  A traditional, lightly fruity kabinett sitting in a perfect place from a top German terroir, it was showing exactly what we were looking for in this kind of wine, substance and complexity with both freshness to the fruit and the development of complexing secondary aromas and flavors of wildflower honey, spice and mineral with the fruitiness dialed back.  A piece of history

Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has impressive tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. This brilliant effort will keep for 10-15 years. - Jeb Dunnuck

In contrast, the 2021 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is more masculine and feral, with ripe black fruits, cracked black pepper, leather, iron, and spring flowers, and a certain bloody character developing with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, it has a similar level of polish but is a touch more concentrated and lengthy on the palate, with ripe, building tannins and awesome length. 92 Points! With a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, De Luze, who is the president of the Alliance des Cru Bourgeois, has produced a dense, ruby/purple-colored wine exhibiting notes of forest floor, spring flowers, blueberry, black raspberry and cassis. This wine looks even more impressive than the 2009, which was another terrific sleeper of the vintage. A superb cru bourgeois that behaves like a classified growth, this brilliant wine can be drunk early on because of its sweet tannin and low acidity, or cellared for 15 or more years. Bravo! - Robert Parker, robertparker.com

100 Points! The 2020 Pavie Macquin is sensational. Rich, dark and explosive, the 2020 balances the natural richness that is such a signature of the estate with a level of energy and vibrancy I have not seen here in the recent past. The result is a towering, imposing Pavie Macquin that hugely delivers. In this vintage, regisseur Nicolas Thienpont did not use the Cabernet Sauvignon, so the blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc lending aromatic presence, energy and depth. What a total knock out! - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

98 Points! I have never had a Pavie Macquin like this. It’s so fresh and vivid with black cherry, currant and raspberry character, as well as citrus. Some mineral and spice. Salt, too. The palate is full and linear with a verticality that takes you so deep and long. Endless. Transparent. Drink after 2028. - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

97 Points! Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color. It bursts with bold notions of baked plums, boysenberries, and fresh, juicy blackberries, plus hints of Indian spices, violets, and clove oil. The full-bodied palate explodes with vibrant black and blue fruits, supported by super-soft tannins and a lively backbone, leading to a long and perfumed finish on this beautiful wine. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

95 Points! Gorgeous cool blue fruits, liquorice and salinity on the nose, clean but really expressive. Full and forward, quite intense with plump fruit, however there's great depth and energy. Concentrated and ripe, but also with cool touches of blueberry, cola and wet-stone nuances. Nice energy and focus, streamlined, but this has a great weight with the bite and grip of 2021. Great effort. - Decanter Magazine

96 Points! A very juicy and rounded young 2021 with berry, chocolate, cedar, balsamic, and redwood aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Velvety tannins. Excellent finish. Extremely well done for the vintage. 79% merlot, 19% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2028. - JamesSuckling.com
