After years working alongside some of Portugal’s most gifted winemakers and with many New World growers, Alexandre “Alex” Guedes—voted in 2025 as one of the country’s top five new winegrowers—joined Quinta da San Michel in 2018 after his first harvest at the estate, where he unexpectedly met his future bride. Under Alex’s steady, inquisitive hand, and guided by the disciplined mind of a winemaker nearing his Master of Wine, Quinta da San Michel is poised to become one of the most promising voices in Portugal’s Atlantic wine frontier. Their vineyards span two striking terrains: Janas, between the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic and new plantings on the legendary sandy soils of Colares—some on the valley floor in meters-deep sands, others above coastal bluffs on calcareous sands and limestone bedrock facing the ocean’s salt-rich winds. San Michel is focused on historic local varieties, like Malvasia de Colares, Arinto, and Galego Dourado, and soon joined by the infamous red Ramisco, each deeply tied to this mythical viticultural coastline. Their wines from clay and limestone echo the great vineyards of France’s Côte d’Or but carry a maritime salty freshness and stout, architectural structure, while those from sand promise wines of delicate filigree, resurrecting the past glories of Colares where Malvasia and Ramisco have thrived ungrafted for centuries.

Galego Dourado, the newcomer, was planted in 2020 on a 0.3-hectare soft slope. It’s direct-pressed and fermented in steel, then given a brief six-month rest on lees in a well-seasoned six-year-old 228-liter French oak barrel. This approach captures the variety’s freshness while allowing a slow, quiet layering of texture.

The 2020 Vinha do Mouro Tinto is a blend of 40% Trincadeira, 30% Aragonez, 20% Alicante Bouschet and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented in stainless steel, and 15% of the volume matured in Portuguese oak barrels. It comes in at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.53 and 5.5 grams of acidity. It has some orange tints, denoting a little evolution, and there's an earthy quality that takes it beyond the fruit. It's ripe without excess and quite polished, with mostly resolved tannins, ready for prime time drinking. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

97 Points! Juicy and muscular, with a ball of plum paste, warmed fig compote and black currant reduction flavors that need time to unwind. Ample graphite- and bramble-accented grip underscores the fruit on the finish, while a ganache note finds room to strut its stuff in the end. Should be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. 94 Points! The 2011 Reserva red is a field blend from old vines (with 80% of the grapes sourced from vines 80+ years old), plus 20% combined of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca from vines of approximately 20 years of average age. The blend was aged in French barriques (70% new) for 17 months. In one of Douro's biggest vintages, Vallado managed to produce a surprisingly elegant and nuanced wine. That was true the first and second time I saw this long ago. This has evolved well. It shows finesse and grace at this point. The big tannins have moderated, and the wine never seems as ripe or as jammy as the 2007. (That's a relative term—the 2007 isn't all that jammy as these things go.) Yet this is a prime-time wine with finesse, elegance and fine fruit, finishing with some understatement in flavor. Unlike the 2007, this isn't as likely today to hit you over the head or grab your attention, but it is completely seductive and perfectly balanced. The texture caresses the palate with velvet. The tannins are much riper. The fruit is still there and tasty but never too obvious. It will be interesting to see how this holds and how it evolves. Unlike the 2007 or even the 2008, this seems ready without a lot of concern over whether future aging will make it a lot better. - Mark Squires, robertparker.com

95 Points! The brightness and transparency of the aromas are impressive, with fresh flowers, blue fruit, crushed stones, lavender and orange blossoms. Medium-bodied, with a tight and focused palate of linear and integrated tannins. Fresh and tangy. Vivid at the end. A unique expression of the vintage and St. Emilion, with so much crunchy fruit. 68.2% merlot, 31.3% cabernet franc and 0.5% malbec. - James Suckling

94 Points! Complex and aromatic, with dried honeysuckle, lanolin and honeycomb notes that complement the core of mango, peach and citrus. There are plenty of spice, smoke and litsea oil details, along with hints of toasted green tea and fresh acidity on the finish. Drink now. - Wine Spectator

A near and dear Champagne house to us, these guys do everything right! 100% Chardonnay from a Premier Cru Village, Pierry, vinified into 3 to 7 years oak barrels during 8 months, with a slight ‘batonnage’ without malolactic fermentation, to preserve the perfect balance between freshness and vinosity.

Dosage brut (6 g/l). Aging on lees in cellar for at least 5 to 8 years (this bottling was 12!), at a constant temperature of 12 °C.

The R. Renaudin Brut Réserve Non-Vintage spent an amazing 14 years en tirage in their cold cellar near Epernay before recent disgorgement. Incredible! The base wine for this 100% Chardonnay cuvee was from the 2010 vintage. Damn. And, of course, the usual 20% of the cuvee is reserve wine from an even older stocks. Crazy. The house does no malolactic fermentation so the wines have a naturally bright, vivid, green apple character that meshes wonderfully with the brioche-y notes from the extnded time aging in bottle prior to disgorgement. 92 Points! A blend of Wenzlau, La Rinconada and Bentrock aged in a mixture of barrique and puncheon, the 2021 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée is fresh, tangy and flinty on the nose. The palate is svelte and succulent, lined with taut acidity supported by a gentle creaminess. 91 Points! The 2021 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée is bright and beautifully focused. Citrus, white flowers, slate and white pepper are all beautifully delineated throughout. 96 Points! This is the best American sparkling wine I've ever tasted. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests. This Grand Reserve Chardonnay made from the cool Sta Rita Hills is crafted with a Champagne pedigree, and it shows. This Blanc de Blancs from across renowned Sta Rita Hills vineyards has undeniable Old World charm and sophistication. The aromatics boast ample toasted biscuit notes and great yeasty complexity from the 30 months on lees. The palate has a fantastic depth of fruit, spiced pear, cardamom, nutmeg and bruised apples. 93 Points! The NV Chardonnay Grand Reserve (Sparkling) is compelling, especially in the way it straddles the line between still and sparkling wine. Creamy and resonant in the glass, the Grande Reserve is laced with apricot, white flowers and chamomile. This is a superb showing for the entry-level wine in what will soon be a range of sparklers from Racines. This release is a blend of fruit from Wenzlau, Bentrock, La Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict .... These new releases from Etienne de Montille’s Racines kick off with the first sparkling wine made in collaboration with Rodolphe Péters.
