  1. DeRose Negrette Cienega Valley Old Vines 2019
    $44.98
    Availability:In Stock

DeRose has a handful of ”old-vine” varieties on its Cienega Valley estate, but none is more exotic that a 10-acre planting of Negrette. These vines are even rare in their native land of France where records show only 100 acres cultivated in the Toulouse region on the Garonne River. Adding to the mystique, the variety was called “Pinot St. George” until the BATF changed its official name effective with the ’97 vintage.

Planted on their own roots in the 1880s, the old vines are dry farmed in gray clay-loam soils that contain large chunks of dolomite. This shimmering white mineral is mostly calcium, an essential element of good soil. Relatively young
in geologic time, these loose soils allow vines to extend deep and wide in search of water and nutrients. Yields average one ton per acre.

  2. Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran Cuvée Charles de Batz 2017
    $21.98
    Availability:In Stock

From the importer: The domaine’s top red wine is the cuvée Charles de Batz, which was the original name of d'Artignan. The wine is composed of 90% Tannat with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines that are between 50 and 100 years old. After being completely destemmed, the Cabernet and Tannat are fermented separately in cement tanks. During this time, a bit of micro-oxygenation or microboullage takes place. The wine then goes into oak (50% new) in an underground cellar where it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. After 12 months in wood, it is blended and bottled after a very light filtration.

Very ripe, rich Madiran that takes no prisoners. This wine succeeds in obtaining more fruit than tannin! The color is nearly opaque—wine doesn't get much darker than this. It displays notes of black fruit (blackcurrant and blackberry) along with just a hint of red fruit. There is a cedar-like creaminess to the oak which is extremely well-integrated. Tannins pick up on the finish but, let's face it, this is Madiran and that is to be expected. These tannins seem to dissolve when the wine is matched with richly flavored meats like leg of lamb, duck, goose or game.

92% Treixadura, 8% Albariño. The Ribeiro is a perfect place for viticulture because of the diversity of grape varieties and soil types. This wine comes from three different vineyard parcels that exist within a five mile radius of each other. One is by the river at a low altitude (the location of Fai un Sol de Carallo, called La Cabrita) and composed of pure granite; another is on well exposed terraces of schist (the location of La Sombrilla, called La Castiñeira); the third (called Château El Paraguas) is the highest altitude and further back away from the river at a high altitude on granite and surrounded by forests and next to their winery.
