The 2022 Gaba do Xil O Barreiro is from their own vineyards, 15 to 16 hectares in Larouco on red granite soils from a transitional place between granite and slate. 2022 was a warm year, a rounder and gentler vintage, and the wine is a little riper at 13% alcohol. Godello behaves differently from the single vineyards and has a rounder mouthfeel. It also has a more reductive profile, fruit-driven and with notes of flowers and herbs. Joseph and Philipp Brundlmayer are passionate not only about winemaking but also their family history, one that is intimately connected with spectacular vineyard sites that they work entirely by hand. In the 1980s Joseph turned a passion for winemaking into a full time profession, taking the grapes that were normally sent to co-op and teaching himself how to make wine, but even more importantly adding vineyard sites. It is a blend of 85% Godello, 10% Loureira and 5% Treixadura that matured in barrel with the lees for 10 months. The élevage has marked the wine with aromas of spices and lees, and it's faintly smoky, with herb and yellow fruit flavors.
