92 Points!  Floral notes redolent of iris and violet mingled with peony preface the 2023 Vacqueyras from Domaine Santa Duc, a moderately weighted, tense and straight wine with a lot of energy, a juicy texture and a long, ethereal, tangy and endless finish. 96 Points! A high percentage (75%) of new wood has given this wine a very fine polished character. Along with the structure, it has brought out impressive aromas of black fruits, cinnamon spice and power. The wine is has a fresh black-fruit aftertaste. - Wine Enthusiast

94 Points! The 2021 Lynch-Bages has a wonderful bouquet with intense blackberry and bilberry fruit, retaining the estuarine element I remarked upon from barrel. The oak here is seamlessly integrated and gains complexity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, very supple and focused, a little more peppery toward the finish with impressive grip and depth in context of the vintage. 90 Points, Wine Spectator's #29 Wine of the Year 2025! A fragrant, floral rosé, with a burst of watermelon and strawberry lemonade notes. Maintains vibrant energy from start to finish, with a saline mineral foundation offsetting the creamy fruit. Balanced and delicious, showing a waft of smoke on the well-meshed finish. Volnay-Santenots is among the appellation's southernmost sites and closest to Meursault. It's situated on the mid-slope section of the hillside. Michel Ampeau's grandfather acquired the first vines in the early-1900s before his father, Robert, acquired more in the 1950s.

Clay-limestone soils that are notably more red in appearance than its neighbors, signifying a greater presence of clay and a higher content of iron which lends more structure.

The astute reader will notice the singular “Vaillon” instead of the more commonplace “Les Vaillons” on Defaix’s label. The boundaries of this vineyard were extended in 1976 to take advantage of its popularity in the market, but the Defaix family owns a prime parcel of old vines (45 years of age) in the original cru—the Vaillon. The steep 28-degree gradient and iron-rich soils of this southeast-facing site render a wine of spicy richness, and Danny’s is a real powerhouse. Showing both remarkable concentration and excellent acidity, this wine has a luscious quality that contrasts gently with the more chiseled crus in his lineup.

The Defaix family—one of the oldest winegrowing families in the region—owns thirty hectares of vines, the vast majority of which are in premier and grand cru vineyards, but Defaix designates only his best lots each vintage as cru-level, declassifying the remainder as villages. Astonishingly, he bottles these cru-level wines only after eight to ten years of aging in tanks, therein undergoing a slow natural settling which prevents the need for filtration.

93+ Points! The just-released 2019 Viré-Clessé Cuvée E. J. Thevenet is showing nicely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of orange confit, honeycomb, pear and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's dense and layered, with bright acids and a charming, suave style despite its concentration. Aromatically, it's still a touch reserved and will really reward a few more years of bottle age. - William Kelley, robertparker.com

When Jean-Luc Thunevin came out with his first vintage (ok, technically, 2^nd) of Chateau Valandraud in the dreadful 1992 harvest, all of us in the business at the time thought, “Oh yeah right… you expect me to believe this is going to be a great bottle of wine coming from one of the worst vintages in Bordeaux and priced at levels we see from “First Growths”?”  But truth be told, it was the wine of that 1992 vintage and Jean-Luc and the “Garage” movement were immediately on the map.

One of his few value labels based on his fine standing and pioneering principals is… Mauvais Garcon.  Well, he actually calls it “Bad Boy” in other markets but our government wouldn’t let that name fly here in the ole U-S-of-A, so we get Mauvais Garcon (‘Bad Boy’ in French).  The wine is made up of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and mainly comes from vineyards in Fronsac. And it is ripe, round, warm, supple and resolved. Pop and pour!

95 Points! Slight hints of wax, earth and lemon show on the still-shy nose. The palate is equally reticent, tightly coiled but speaking of concentrated citrus freshness that verges into zestiness. The bone-dry nature makes it hard to sense ripe citrus slumbering at the core but the fruit will reveal itself with bottle age. Concentration, purity and power promise a future firework, discernible now in the tangerine zestiness on the finish. - Wine Enthusiast

94 Points! The deep ruby-hued 2023 Gigondas Four Danuga checks in as a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre. With rocking framboise, pepper, sweet flower, and incense-driven aromatics, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, graceful mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has a kiss of modern character with its purity and subtle oak, but it's still a classic Gigondas that has so much to love. - Jeb Dunnuck

93 Points! The 2023 Ventoux Quintessence Blanc was made from 80% Roussanne and 20% Clairette, with 60% brought up in 10% new demi-muids and the rest in tank and concrete. Ripe pears, white flowers, spice, and subtle toasted notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful texture and the fresh, pure, precise style of the vintage. - Jeb Dunnuck

92-94 Points! Youthful purple. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, star anise, olive, violet and tobacco. A smoky mineral accent builds steadily in the glass and energizes the spice-laced, dark berry liqueur, smoky bacon and floral pastille flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Clings with strong tenacity on the youthfully tannic finish, leaving behind sappy blue fruit, cracked pepper and mineral notes. - Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

Made from 45% Cinsault and 40% Mourvedre, with the balance split among Grenache and Carignan, the pale-iron-colored Côtes de Provence Rose is closer to Bandol-level complexity and concentration than something typically Cotes de Provence. A core of sappy, glycerol red-cherry fruit anchors a firm, punchy minerality, and the finish is remarkably persistent. The vineyards that comprise this wine were, in fact, classified as Bandol AOC as recently as 2012, and this wine clearly distinguishes itself from among the vast ocean of Côtes de Provence rose by virtue of its terroir’s unique pedigree.

Mickael’s Crémant Blanc is pure Chardonnay from Arbois-Pupillin with thirty months of lees contact and a mere 0.5 grams per liter dosage. Although the vintage is not indicated on the label, Crinquand’s Crémant is vintage specific, all the juice being from a single harvest. It offers textural plushness and breadth balanced by iron-tinged minerality and a gently honeyed character.

‘Etelois’ has some of the grander neighbors in Gevrey-Chambertin; this perfect parcel borders both grand cru Chapelle-Chambertin and premier cru ‘Petite Chapelle.’ Older vines planted in the early 1960s, soils that couldn’t be better if they tried: this is one heady, handsome and long-hauler Gevrey.
