Medium garnet-brick in color, the 1998 Peby Faugeres opens with a decadently fruity nose of blueberry compote, plum preserves and dark chocolate with wafts of sweaty leather, camphor, chocolate box and Ceylon tea plus a hint of truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of black and blue fruit preserves with the acid sitting nice and subtle in the background and plenty plush tannic structure in the forefront. It finishes on a lingering earthy / barnyard note. So much fruit comes charging out of the gate here: profound crème de cassis, baked blackberries and blackberry preserves with notions of beef dripping, crushed rocks, unsmoked cigar, sandalwood and dried lavender. Big, rich and beautifully impactful, it is completely packed with taut, muscular black and blue fruit preserves, maintaining nice firm grainy tannins with layer after layer of exotic spices, meat and earth notions, finishing epically long and minerally. 90 Points! The 1996 Lynch-Moussas is still surprisingly deep in colour, quite limpid, with little sign of its age. The bouquet is classic 'old school' Pauillac with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit, touches of cold black tea and mahogany bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with an East Asian-tinged opening, hoisin and a pinch of white pepper. This displays better than expected substance and cohesion, lightly spiced on its finely-tuned and quite vigorous finish. It's an excellent vintage that's generally known as a Right Bank year, but is more than holding its own over in St-Julien. Made from 20-year old 100% Cabernet Sauvignon vines, it exhibits a saturated black purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of spice box, licorice, black currant liqueur, and classy new French oak. It is deep, full-bodied, and sweet, with supple tannin, and a seamless, concentrated finish that reveals notes of eucalyptus as it cascades over the palate. Importer notes: Montebuono, like the classic Barbacarlo blend has some Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta, but there is also a little Barbera in the mix. The vineyards sit next to each other and while the vines here are also up to around 100 years old and planted over tufo, the site is a little less steep than Barbacarlo. Like its older sibling, it exhibits an inky/blue/purple color followed by an attractive bouquet of creosote, tar, creme de cassis, incense, and flowers, but no evidence of oak. This full-bodied, beautifully layered, stunningly pure, long effort is one of the most compelling Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted from South Australia. It can compete with the best of Napa Valley or Washington State in terms of New World Cabernet Sauvignons.
