Absolutely delightful stuff, ultimate pizza wine!

From the importer: Gojer's estate, Glögglhof, is right in the middle of the St. Magdalena hill, a perfect amphitheater just North-East of the city of Bolzano. Franz, the 5th generation to make wine at Glögglhof, is one of the 'gang of four,' a group of fine small producers from the Alto Adige who share a philosophy of winemaking: very expressive, very typical, very well-made wines.

Karneid, the vineyard site, is a high-altitude plot on the other side of the valley from the winery. These Schiava vines were already very old (plnated 1948!) when the Gojer’s purchased the site, hence the name ‘Alte Reben’, which means ‘Old Vines’. 91 Points! The 2020 Barbera d'Asti Montebruna is a plump and rich red with ripe berry notes, toasted spice, cinnamon and grilled Mediterranean herb. Despite the heft and brawn of this wine, the mouthfeel is pushed along by fresh acidity and a powerful 15% alcohol content. 93 Points! Part of the Scarrone Vineyard was replanted in 1989, and these younger vines give rise to the Vietti 2020 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone. This wine is also thick and darkly concentrated but not to the same degree as the version made with fruit from old vines. Indeed, it's fun to try these two bottles side by side. 96 Points! This shows notes of darker berries with red licorice and fresh ripe peaches. Intense with hints of moist clay soil and bark undertones. Full and steady on the palate with a firm backbone of chalky tannins that go on for minutes. Lot of tension and energy. Stays long on the palate, turning to a more smooth and powdery mouthfeel. 96 Points! This has a fresh and fragrant nose with beautiful cherries and raspberries as well as rose petals, licorice and crushed stones. It’s firm and linear on the palate with a medium body and vivid acidity. It’s hard to draw a line between the tannins and the earthy, mineral aspect as both build a chalky mouthfeel and lead to a long textural finish. 96 Points! Pure cherry fruit here, reminiscent of kirsch, with orange peel and an ashy, mineral backbone to it, almost like cracked flint or gunpowder. Similar aromas and flavors on both the nose and on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, really tense and firm with chalky tannins and a lingering crushed granite and rock sensation on the palate. 93 Points! The 2020 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Serraboella is bright, effusive and full of character. A burst of dark red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and pipe tobacco makes a strong first impression. From the importer: This wine takes its name of the vineyard where the grapes are grown. With wonderful aromatics and soft tannins, this Schiava is a great summer red. Served slightly chilled.

Varietal Composition: 95% Schiava (Vernatsch), 5% Lagrein

Elaboration: Fermentation occurs with the skin contact in stainless-steel tanks and is followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then separated from the skins and transferred into concrete tanks, where it refines for four months.

Tasting Notes: Brilliant translucent ruby red in color with a fruity bouquet reminiscent of black cherry and violets expanding to a medium-bodied palate of red summer fruits; a succulent wine with mild acidity, medium length, and a soft and smooth finish.
