This wine is also thick and darkly concentrated but not to the same degree as the version made with fruit from old vines. Indeed, it's fun to try these two bottles side by side. 93 Points! The 2020 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Serraboella is bright, effusive and full of character. A burst of dark red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and pipe tobacco makes a strong first impression. A classic example of the breed, grown in calcareous clay marl in a relatively dense planting (5000 vines per hectare), and soft pressed into temperature-controlled tanks. It ferments to a modest 5.5% alcohol and the fermentation process also creates the carbon dioxide to make the wine frizzante, keeping it fresh, bright, and lively across the palate. Brisk acidity gives everything a lift.

A new submission from this historic estate, the Bovio 2021 Barbera d'Alba Il Ciotto is vinous and very primary with raw flavors of blackberry and ripe plum. The wine exhibits a thickened and darkened appearance with blackberry or black cherry confit. This thickly concentrated red has soft tannins and a dense, cushiony texture.
