93 Points! Part of the Scarrone Vineyard was replanted in 1989, and these younger vines give rise to the Vietti 2020 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone. This wine is also thick and darkly concentrated but not to the same degree as the version made with fruit from old vines. Indeed, it's fun to try these two bottles side by side. From the importer: Karneid, the vineyard site, is a high-altitude plot on the other side of the valley from the winery. Very aromatic, a distinctive pear-drop nose, with flower notes reminiscent of Riesling (Kerner is a cross between Riesling and Schiava). Very fresh acidity, bone dry, I would drink this as a dry aperitif or with all sorts of appetizers.

A new submission from this historic estate, the Bovio 2021 Barbera d'Alba Il Ciotto is vinous and very primary with raw flavors of blackberry and ripe plum. The wine exhibits a thickened and darkened appearance with blackberry or black cherry confit. This thickly concentrated red has soft tannins and a dense, cushiony texture.
