The Marchesi di Barolo 1961 was the most stoic of the trio, which isn’t at all a bad thing…on the contrary. After opening the wine showed a touch more brick than the ’58 (perhaps due to the sun, we enjoyed it on an outside patio) but the wine completely rocked the palate. Here there was more tension, more precision, the fruit less precocious but still very engaging. The ’58 more giving, the ’61 more classic Nebbiolo, if that makes sense after more than 60 years in the bottle?
