To all Wine Exchangers,

Wow, where to begin here.

I’ll start with the one question we get asked the most by shoppers who frequent our Burgundy aisle.

“Hi, do you have anything from Burgundy, drinkable now, with some bottle age, but not too expensive?”

Ok, like, 95% of the time I can’t help them. They’re thinking top vintage, top appellation, perfect provenance, all under $70. Good Luck with that.

That 2011 Marsannay at $30 isn’t going to get it done. Nor will the 2012 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru at $100.

These cats are looking for the impossible…the impossible, that is, until now.

We’ve recently come across a cache of what is the Holy Grail for Burgundy fans, a couple of:

  • highly appellated wines
  • from top producers,
  • with bottle age,
  • from 2005, one of Burgundy’s all-time vintages,
  • perfectly stored,
  • at sensational prices.

Let’s kick things off with our pick of the litter, the Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2005.

The Domaine Marc Roy is among the Gevrey elite, though the Roy family’s microscopic production seldom leaves us any Burgundy in any volume worth talking about.

The 2005 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes was crafted by Alexandrine Roy from 50-70 year old vines from such noted lieu-dits as La Justice, Les Crais, Murot, Seuvrée and Carougeot. Only around 20% new oak was used.

The wine is awesome now! The 2005 harvest was one for the ages and the wine captures all the glorious, silky fruit of the vintage with the minerality and weight of the appellation. It’s a wine that Allen Meadows (Burghound) wrote was, “…rich, full, sweet and firm flavors that offer good detail on the sappy, persistent and slightly austere finish that definitely displays old vine depth of extract.”

I’ve had this wine four times in the past month. It is in a spectacular place as ten years from vintage, in the great years, for a Villages wine, is the prime time for popping corks and enjoying the heck out of yourself. It’s one of those bottles that makes you give in to the cruel temptress that is Burgundy, simple as that.

The current (2012) vintage of this wine sells nationally for $69.98.

We’re selling the 2005 for the same price.

That’s just dumb.

But man cannot live by Gevrey alone, so next on our DRINK list is the Henri & Gilles Remoriquet Nuits Saint Georges Les Allots 2005.

Les Allots is a top Villages level vineyard, on the Vosne Romanee side of the appellation, near the Premier Cru Vignerondes. The wines from this site are typical of this area in Nuits, warmer than the sterner wines to the south, with a bit of the Vosne silk/spice on the mid-palate and minerals/iron on the finish.

This is a hefty bottle of Nuits, full-bodied, surprisingly dense in color and, like the Gevrey from Roy, drinking perfectly now. Hold on to it if you want but I know I couldn’t…and didn’t.

At $64.98 it represents a brilliant value in the world of affordable, drinkable Burgundy, from legendary vintages with at least a decade of aging.

That world exists only while the wines are available. Don’t miss out…

Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2005

From <70 year old vines. This is distinctly riper than its '04 counterpart with a deft touch of wood framing the dark berry fruit and warm earth aromas that lead to rich, full, sweet and firm flavors that offer good detail on the sappy, persistent and slightly austere finish that definitely displays old vine depth of extract. This is not a big wine but I like the focus and finishing intensity. - Allen Meadows, Burghound #25
