To all Wine Exchangers,

Too soon? We don’t think so.

In light of the stock market having some, ahem, ‘corrections’ going on this week, we thought a few folks might be feeling a little lighter in the pocket book and accordingly, might be looking to scale down at least until the correction is, um, corrected.

The 2013 Myka wines were some of our fastest sellers of the last several years. You guys went gaga for their incredible value, drinkability and, quite honestly, authenticity.

It’s hard to get $10 wine that actually tastes like some thing, from some where. Most of the wines in this price point nowadays are cocktailed up with wood chips, staves, purple magic, or any other creative winery solution to winning the hearts of novice drinkers in closed door, one-way mirror consumer survey tastings.

Hey, who doesn’t like ice cream, right?

But I’m not as keen on it in my wine, and neither are the folks at Myka.

Mica Raas and assistant winemaker Tayler Gibson have fashioned two of the finest Chard and Pinot deals we’ve tasted this year, at prices that would make the stingiest wine drinker open their wallet.

The 2014 Myka Cellars Chardonnay is 100% Monterey County fruit this year. They simply liked what they saw with Monterey in 2014 as opposed to the Santa Cruz Mountains wine they put together last year.

As Taylor writes, “The 2014 Mitzi Chardonnay is stainless steel tank fermented for a cleaner, refreshing crispness that is characteristic of Monterey County Chardonnays. Same clone, same rootstock and same variety as the 2013 (Santa Cruz Mountain) Chardonnay. Basically the same numeric as far as pH, but Monterey produces a cleaner wet stone, flinty fruit. Where Santa Cruz Mountain fruit can be aggressively citric and bolder.”

It’s awesome. Less chewy and lemony than the 2013, but with a deeper core of fruit and great freshness from its cool climate origins. A pure delight.

Myka’s 2014 Pinot Noir carries a humble Central Coast appellation but this wine is certainly a bit more than that. It reminds us a lot of the first couple Pinot Noirs from The Pinot Project we sold a few years back, when those wines were informed with a sourcing of fruit that went well beyond the humble $10 price point.

This wine tastes like Pinot Noir. It tastes like delicious Pinot Noir. It tastes like delicious Pinot Noir that should sell for 2-3 times the price, loaded with bright cherry fruit, a supple, slippery texture and ripe, glossy tannins.

No, it doesn’t have any ‘scores’. At these prices, who needs them?

Ah, the price. Again, I have no idea how these wines hit the shelf at $9.98 a bottle. Again, when you go on Myka’s website the 2012 Chardonnay is listed at $28 a bottle and the Pinot Noir isn’t even shown.

Legit $28 retail Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that we’re selling for just $9.98 a bottle.

Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 2013

91 Points! Ridge's 2013 Zinfandel Paso Robles, from the Benito Dusi Ranch, exudes Paso warmth and richness. Unquestionably racy and overt, the 2013 offers striking depth and intensity, with a slightly roasted, sweet quality to the fruit. Sweet tobacco, cedar and dried herbs add closing shades of nuance, but the 2013 remains quite opulent in style. Still, all the elements are in the right place. The 2013 could use a few years to soften. It will be appreciated most by readers who enjoy intense, super-ripe Zinfandels.
