To all Best Winers,

“The 2009s appear to be (Delas’) finest overall performances to date…”

“(Winemaker) Jacques Grange did a fabulous job with his Cote Roties in…2009…”

”The 2009 Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron exhibits lots of spice, raspberry, cassis, licorice, incense, Christmas fruitcake and fried bacon notes. The smokiness, seductiveness, lusciousness and medium to full-bodied, round, generous texture make for an endearing, sexy Cote Rotie to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. 93 points.”

Robert Parker was obviously smitten by the 2009 Cote Roties from Delas.

And why shouldn’t he have been? It was only one of the great championship performances by a winery in this sought-after sector of the northern Rhone.

The vintage was perfect, Jacques Grange was at the top of his game and the vineyards delivered an exceptional bottle of wine.

So why is it almost 50% off?

Yup, that’s a head-scratcher. We have no idea. We NEVER see Cote Rotie on closeout. It’s the unicorn wine of closeouts. So little is produced in this area and demand is so high that we seldom see wines from this appellation ‘hanging around’. In fact, it’s usually the opposite.

But I think in this instance everyone got caught up in the hunt for Delas’ 98+ scoring La Landonne (which sells for $200+ a bottle right now) in this vintage, and kind of forgot about one of the premier wines of the area.

Great for us…and you.

The 2009 Delas Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron is 100% Syrah sourced from both the Cote Blonde and Cote Brune hillsides in Cote Rotie and represents the perfect synthesis of the area. The Brune delivers a bottomless bowl of black fruit and spice cake, while the Blonde solidify the depth of signature bacon fat and blueberry aromas and flavors that make this wine one of the most distinctive in the world.

We cracked a bottle for your security, taking one for the team for the sake of quality control. This wine was a luscious, juicy, riveting, smoky, bacon-y Syrah delight of the highest order. This is a screaming deal.

Parker put the suggested retail price of this wine at $125 (to high), Wine Spectator put it at $65 (too low). The real retail price is actually in the middle, around $90.

So, at $49.98 you’re talking about a safe 45% haircut on the actual retail price. That is substantial on a wine that should not have even been discounted in the first place.

What’s next, Sine Qua Non closeouts? Harlan at 50% off?

Again, I’ll leave you with these key words from Parker’s description:

…spice, raspberry, cassis, licorice, incense, Christmas fruitcake, fried bacon, smokiness, seductiveness, lusciousness, generous, endearing, sexy…

Shall I continue? Hurry…you can thank us later…
