To all Best Winers,
The southern part of Burgundy, known as the Maconnais, is home to some of the greatest Chardonnay bargains in the world.
Here we encounter famously appellated Chardonnay wines like Macon-Villages and Pouilly-Fuissé, which have always magically appeared on every wine list in some form or another in seemingly every corner of the world.
These are the French Chardonnays for most of us that may not have the scratch to pop for a $100 bottle of Chassagne or Puligny Montrachet, they provide a classically French wine drinking experience at an extremely affordable price. Value is never the issue in the Maconnais, it’s merely how good a value you’re going to get!
The wines from the artisanal house of Maison Jean Rijckaert (pronounced ‘rake heart’) have always been considered the tip of the top from this value-laden zone. They are pricier than many from here, but even at their stiff-for-the-Maconnais tariffs they equal wines that are twice the price of their Cote de Beaune neighbors to the north!
So, what do you get when you take one of Rijckaert’s top wines, in a top vintage, and slash the price by a third?
YAHTZEE!
We were pleasantly surprised at this terrific deal that materialized out of nowhere. We love selling (and drinking) the Rijckaert wines as they appeal to just about everyone. They are rich, minerally, lush, focused, floral, engaging.
This bottling is exactly that. Robert Parker put it in his ‘Exceptional Value’ report in December of last year, noting that, at its $30 retail it was a great deal, with “…beautiful notes of white peaches, poached pears, caramelized citrus and apple blossoms in the stunning fragrance. Intense, rich, full and layered…”
He then proceeded to score the wine 92 points, making it his top-scoring Maconnais wine of the vintage.
Sheesh.
Let’s recap. We’ve got a wine here that:
· is already Robert Parker’s top-scoring wine of the vintage from the area
· is already an ‘exceptional value’
· is already a tiny-production ‘tough get’
· at an additional 1/3 off it’s already crazy-low price?
· Super-duper old-viney goodness
Need we say more? Come and get it…
