Crazy thing is, they did! We even tried to ‘stir the pot’ and made a diligent selection of wines that ranged in price from $17-$400 a bottle, including a couple of 100 point Parker legends, L’Evangile and Pavie. Now, my experience with past tastings in this format is that there is inevitably one or two of those sub-$30 wines that steal the show and place ahead of the ‘big boys’. In fact, there was one wine in that price range that did put on quite the show (the 2009 La Goulee from one of our previous e-mails).
But the biggest surprise is that, essentially, there were no surprises. In other words, the big dogs ate up everything in their path in this legendary vintage. This included L’Evangile, which had a stellar showing, and Chateau Pavie, which also blew the doors off. They finished 1 and 2.
The point? The point is that the greatest wines of the 2009 vintage are undeniably great. These are wines that transcend vintage and time, already starting to carve out their spots in the Bordeaux Hall of Fame alongside old-timers like ’45 Mouton and ’47 Cheval Blanc, ’61 Latour and Latour a Pomerol and more current entrants, ’89 Haut Brion and ’90 Margaux.
We have in stock and ready to ship, a few cases of these modern day Hall of Fame candidates, all hailing from Pomerol. Considering the prices currently fetched for the wines listed above, these are true deals when compared to their older peers.
The 2009 L’Evangile (Parker 100) is sublime. Reticent right now (as it should be), even in its closed state it is a head-spinner. Too many notes!
The 2009 L’Eglise Clinet (Parker 99+, and a big plus at that) will almost certainly achieve perfection provided Bob Parker is there to see it. Big medicine, classically styled, this wine has serious torque. You may need a special license to drink it…
The 2009 La Violette (Parker 98) is currently the hottest cult wine in Bordeaux. The wine cannot be found. We have the only case in America that we know of. We were lucky enough to work the harvest at La Violette with proprietor Catherine Peré-Vergé and know just how special it was.
Finally, if you really want to reach for the golden ring, we have a six pack of the 2009 Chateau Petrus (Parker 100) in the house. Tristen still cannot stop talking about his initial barrel tastings of this wine even three years after they took place! It is obviously impactful stuff and also a tough find…
To sum it up, here's why you should buy:
• A quartet of the greatest wines ever produced in Bordeaux
• Most are now simply sold out
• All 98-100 points from Robert Parker
• Only 1-2 cases of each available!
• You will not find these in stock at a better price in America
