100 Points! The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. This plot is located at the southern end of Saint-Aubin on the border of the Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet. The south-facing plot was planted in 1988. Very calcareous with hard and deformed stones that pierce the surface in some places and lay flush in others. After aging in barrels for 15 months (15% of new oak barrels), the wine is placed in vat for 3 months and is bottled at the estate.

From the importer: “Originel” is composed of 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Blanc, and 15% each of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, all from two different plots: Chardonnay from “Les Sentiers” on chalk and clay, and Pinot Blanc from chalk and sand (with correspondingly earlier ripening) of “La Pruches d’en Haut,” an originel plot that was listed as a terroir of Champagne before the 1800s. 60% of this wine is from 2013 and 40% from the “solera” foudre, with 3g/L dosage.

François has two impressive plots in the renowned 1er Cru Les Vergers, one which was planted in 1987, and the other was planted in the 1950s. Both plots are located in the northwest corner of the Cru, totaling 0.46 ha, and border the 1er Cru sites of “Les Chaumées” and “Clos Saint-Jean.” Lequin’s Vergers is his most taut, vertical wine in the Premier Cru range; marked more by structure and acidity than fullness and creaminess. The Domaine Lequin Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 2023 was aged for 12 months in French oak (20% new) followed by 3 months in stainless steel to harmonize.

93+ Points! The 2020 Cuvée Las Santas was produced from a number of small plots at higher altitudes and cooler expositions (north), only Garnacha, small plots. It has some Mediterranean, Châteauneuf-like character (cherries in liqueur, Mediterranean herbs) with 14% alcohol, very good acidity and very fine grained tannins. They fermented it with 50% full clusters and matured it in used French oak barrels for nine months. This is the wine they produce in the style they like, a more personal wine from special plots. 1,423 bottles were filled in March 2022.  - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

Ampeau's Savigny-les-Beaune is drawn from a single plot in Aux Fourneaux on the vineyard's lower section (with village designation). The vines came from Michel's mother's side in the 1940s after the marriage of his parents.

Located in the Sonoma Mountain AVA of California, the dry farmed Ellison vineyard planted in 1969 on a small 1.5 acre plot on volcanic soils is one of the oldest plantings of Sauvignon Blanc in California. Farmed using organic methods. Hand harvested and fermented in neutral barrels using native yeasts. The wine remained on its lees throughout fermentation and elevage.AGING12 months in neutral oak

For us, Matelica is THE spot for Verdicchio. And this is one of the most exciting new wineries in this area, having been founded in 2004. The vines are planted around the winery on a hillside above the valley of Matelica with sight line to the mountains of the Faggi Secolari di Canfaito national forest. The plots were replanted with mix clones in 2007, covering approximately 9 hectares over calcareous clay soils with substantial slope.

95 Points! It's full-bodied, fairly concentrated, and generous. There’s wonderful freshness, a particularly strong mineral expression. Finishes on a touch of toasty oak.
