The 2022 Brand Turckheim Riesling is very clear, bright and generous on the finely flinty (or petrichor) nose that indicates ripe and elegant fruit intertwined with cooler herbal and vegetal notes. Round, generous yet also very mineral and tensioned on the palate, with fine yet palatable tannins, this is another powerful and structured Riesling, yet it is finer than the Wineck-Schlossberg. 92 Points! The new young red 2021 El Predilecto recovers Predilecto, which was a historic brand of the house, a wine with less aging than the rest and more fruity character. In this case, they want it to show the fruit expression of the vineyard without oak. They call it the new old concept in Rioja, what the wines used to be before the arrival of the French, pure fruit. It's a blend of 65% Garnacha from Cárdenas and Cordovín and 35% Tempranillo from Samaniego that fermented destemmed but uncrushed (so not exactly a carbonic maceration) with clean and fresh aromas and flavors. Palenqueros Madrecuishe was produced in the village of Santa Maria La Pila at 1552 meters above sea level by fourth generation producer Don Valente Garcìa, alongside his grandson Semei, from cultivated Madrecuishe. Cooked in an oven pit and hand crushed with a wooden mallet, the agave is fermented in cypress and pine wood vats using the ambient yeast of the distillery before it is distilled on a 350 liter copper pot still powered by direct fire. Bottled at still strength of 48.9% with no additives.

Palenqueros is a project initiated by La Maison & Velier’s Luca Gargano and involves six producers from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The initial series of 12 certified mezcals in 2019 was a collaboration project with Tradición Chagoya, which owns and operates other mezcal brands like Donaji and Los Cuerudos. The second series, released in 2024, featured 6 agave distillates and was solely a project of LM&V.

Italian import consultant and brand manager for many significant Italian producers, Gino Della Porta, and his close friend, superstar-enologist Gian Luca Colombo founded Sette in 2017 with the purchase of a 5.8ha hill in Bricco di Nizza, in Nizza Monferrato. They join the new generation of driven young winegrowers who experiment with new and ancient techniques to express their vision of wine free from cultural and regional expectations while employing the most ecological methods possible. Certified organic since 2018 and in conversion to biodynamics in 2020, their terroir is composed of sandy limestone, chalk, and a wide variety of other siliceous geological formations on steep hills with great variations of soil grain.

The Sette Grignolino was destemmed and naturally fermented up to 18°C for 20-22 days with 2 daily punchdowns aged 9 months in Tava Amphoras with the first sulfites added after malolactic fermentation. It’s neither filtered nor fined.

98 Points! Originally a part of the legendary Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house, Rare is moving their Champagne Millésime to a new brand and want it to stand alone. (Think Delamotte and Salon.) The 13th vintage for this cuvée, the 2013 Champagne Millésime is a blend is 70% Chardonnay with the rest Pinot Noir, with the majority of the blend coming from the Montagne de Reims Grand Cru and Premier Cru. A bright yellow hue, its aromatics are exquisite and well-balanced, with fresh notes of key lime, candied apple, fresh croissant dough, fresh pineapple, and honeysuckle. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with a rounded and supple texture and a pillowy mousse. It’s long on the palate and has a silky personality as well as a long, pristine finish. It has fantastic balance of decadence and freshness, and I could drink this all day. It’s going to have a long drinking window. Drink 2024-2044 and beyond. Average vine age of 65 years here. From the importer: Although full and generous at the same time, our Fixin "Fondemens" will surprise by its crimson and steady color. Its fruity nose reminds a red fruit coulis, and in mouth it will amaze by its greediness and its frankness characteristic of Pinot Noir. They have a good acid content and are endowed with a solidity and substance which places them among wines that are best laid down for a certain time. When young they possess animal aromas suggestive of pelts and musk. These are ample wines which develop their bouquet over time as they mature.

TASTING NOTES: Overall a light and delicate junmai ginjo; lower in aroma and fruit than many ginjos. Representative of the Hiroshima region which is known for soft water and crisp flavors.

Beautifully pure and medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has integrated acidity, a fresh, focused style, and ripe tannins. Balanced and seamless, it shows the terroir’s freshness and precision while still bringing concentration and texture. 96 Points! The 2021 Descendant is often termed as the "Baby Runrig," which, as we all know, is a bit of a myopic way to view things, but it gets the point across. This is Shiraz fermented on Viognier skins (8% by weight, no liquid) and decidedly floral on the nose, with marmalade and orange peel, pink peppercorns and blood plums. The wine is dense and velvety, with loads of tannin; the Viognier, while contributing floral aromatics, textural silk and flow, also contributes tannin, and it is felt here. There is no new oak, which helps with the tannin expression and core of red and purple fruit. The signature Barossan red dirt and ironstone show through the finish. It's really good!
