Rudy Zinfandel North Coast 2018
The Rudy Zinfandel ‘North Coast’ 2018, definitely shows its Napa roots with plenty of firm, bluer fruits and a nice streak of pepper, all mediated with time in the bottle. All in all, it’s a very fine representation of Zinfandel, the varietal, with a lot of character and an easier demeanor probably thanks to that bottle age. Super-classy, textbook old-vine Napa Zin (of which there’s almost none left with the race to plant more Cabernet), we liked the wine before we even heard the price.
Rudy made his way in the Napa Valley for a quarter century and, finally, in 2016 he decided it was time to hang up his wine thief on Diamond Mountain. He set about to sell the winery but continued to make the Rudy wines to fulfill his contractual obligations on the Zinfandel with John Monhoff. This 2018 was the last edition of the Rudy Zinfandel. In this case, this bottling was entirely from the Monhoff Vineyard. He could have labeled it as a single vineyard Napa Valley bottling. It even sports a Von Strasser cork! But semi-retired Rudy, kind of a no-nonsense guy anyway, understandably didn’t want to deal with the typical red tape required to revamp the label, particularly since there were no future plans for the project.
