97 Points! The 2022 Blaufränkisch Ried Schwemmer is from deeper, calcareous, loamy soils on top of limestone, from vines planted in the 1930s, 1950s and 1970s. Tiny violet petal scents, small but fragrant, set the tone here, putting an aromatic accent on darker fruit. The palate comes in with poise, putting it freshness even before presenting its dark, juicy blueberry fruit and density with a disarming, self-evident matter-of-factness. 97 Points! I have heard gruner veltliner dismissed for supposedly not being elegant, but this is an extremely elegant example! Very complex nose of snow peas, green beans, wild herbs and green pepper. On the medium-bodied palate, this remarkable gruner veltliner has a discreet succulence, but what makes it amazing is the way it glides so gracefully over the palate, then splash lands in a deep pool of wet stone minerality. Michael Wenzel made a very small amount of this super fresh, floral and lively wine. Born from a conversation with his importer, this is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Chardonnay grown on Quarz and Limestone respectively. The grapes are de-stemmed and then gently crushed with 5 days skin contact. Spontaneous native yeast fermentation, One third of the wine is then aged on the lees for 14 months in Terracotta Amphora, the rest in stainless steel to maintain its bright character. Minimal sulphur added. This fun, luscious take on a Fruilian style wine makes it perfect for sipping on its own or for pairing with a wide range of dishes.

The grapes for this delicious Zweigelt are sustainably farmed from vineyards located in the dry, hot region Seewinkel region of Neusiedlersee. The soils are also quite dry and gritty full of minerals which are imparted to this refined wine made by Pepi Umathum and Domaine Andau working in tandem at their green, solar and wind powered winery. An incredibly deep red color with a nose of fresh plums and dark berries and hints of black pepper. Lovely weight balanced by acidity and a long juicy finish.
