This is richly aromatic, with an initial range of mocha, spice box and sweet smoke that adds complexity to the flavors of plum compote, black cherry pâte de fruit, loamy earth and dried sage. 93 Points! The 2023 Silver Label is a ripe and balanced Monastrell with integrated oak. It matured in new and second-use French oak barrels for one year, but they were looking for lower toast and less impact of the wood in this wine versus earlier vintages, when it was 100% new oak. It has a fruit-driven nose with some spicy notes, a medium- to full-bodied palate and less alcohol than last year, 14.5%, with a tender mouthfeel. Wild and floral, with notes of rose petal, tarragon, and spring meadow herbs, this 100% Monastrell from Jumilla’s Valle Estrecho shows bright grip and chalky tannins. Aged seven months in old concrete tanks from the 1960s, it’s textured, vibrant, and deeply rooted in the fruit character of Monastrell and the stony, calcareous soils.
