What a treat we have in store for you today!

Fingers Crossed is an artisanal Rhône-based winery in California's Ojai Valley. Run by Nikolas and Julia Krankl (Nikolas is the son of Sine Qua Non's Manfred Krankl), Fingers Crossed continues to establish itself as one of California's top estates. Owners and winemakers Nikolas and Julia are hyper-focused on quality over quantity, producing a minuscule 1,900 cases annually.

In 2012, Nikolas got the winemaking itch and started training at Sine Qua Non with his dad and Jim Binns (now of Andremily fame). By 2017, Nikolas launched his own label alongside Julia, and Fingers Crossed was born. Each year they craft their own distinctive artwork for their bottles, which change annually to express the individuality of each vintage. Every label tells a story.

The Fingers Crossed style is unabashedly Californian: sun-kissed wines that are decadent, perfumed, opulent and regal, yet remain light on their feet. California through a French looking glass. As Jeb Dunnuck puts it: "These are consistently world-class wines that show remarkable balance between richness and elegance."

In 2022 the Krankls hand-crafted a couple of killer reds from this sun-kissed vintage:

99 Points! 2022 Red Wine Life And Death
Grenache-dominated with 22% Syrah, 13% each of Mourvèdre and Graciano, and 8.5% Petite Sirah. Fermented with 25% whole clusters and brought up in 70% new oak. Fruit sourced from Bien Nacido, Stolpman, Alta Mesa, Sanger, and Rancho Boa Vista. From Dunnuck: "A masterpiece of a Rhône-like blend from California's Central Coast that could come from nowhere else." Will evolve beautifully for 15-20 years.

100 Points! 2022 Syrah Life And Death
100% Syrah from Bien Nacido and Stolpman vineyards, aged 21 months in 61% new oak. From Dunnuck: "Another singular, as well as absolutely perfect, wine from this remarkable family team. Deep, pure, elegant, and beautifully balanced. Stunning stuff." Will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink beautifully over the following two decades.

99 Points! The 2022 Red Wine Life And Death is Grenache-dominated yet includes 22% Syrah, 13% each of Mourvèdre and Graciano, and 8.5% Petite Sirah, all of which was fermented with 25% whole clusters and brought up in 70% new oak. It offers a sensational perfume of black raspberry and black cherry fruits intermixed with camphor, lavender, white flowers, and peppery, almost garrigue-like nuances. With full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and a massive, yet somehow elegant, seamless mouthfeel as well as incredible length, it's a masterpiece of a Rhône-like blend from California's Central Coast that could come from nowhere else. The fruit sourcing here is a mix of Bien Nacido, Stolpman, Alta Mesa, Sanger, and Rancho Boa Vista, and the marriage of richness, purity, and finesse is something to behold. This beauty will evolve for 15-20 years if well stored. - Jeb Dunnuck
