There are great Bordeaux vintages, and then there are wines that, a decade later, have proven to be every bit as special as we thought they were from the beginning. The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is one of them.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this extraordinary vintage, Cos d'Estournel has created a special three-bottle collection: two bottles of the 2016 Cos d'Estournel and one bottle of the 2016 Pagodes de Cos, released directly from the château. These bottles have remained at the estate since bottling. The provenance simply doesn't get any better.
The 2016 has now earned four perfect 100-point scores (James Suckling, The Wine Independent, Vinous, and Jeff Leve of The Wine Cellar Insider), with Jeb Dunnuck right behind at 99. Ten years after the vintage, it has firmly established itself as one of the great modern-day Cos d'Estournels.
Our Tasting Note
The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is an absolute powerhouse, but never heavy. Deep cassis, blackberry and blueberry are layered with graphite, crushed rock, tobacco, violets and exotic spice. The palate is incredibly concentrated, with polished tannins and remarkable freshness giving the wine both energy and precision. There is tremendous depth here, followed by a finish that just keeps going. This is classic Cos, but with an extra level of purity and refinement that separates the truly great vintages.
And then there is the 2016 Pagodes de Cos: same estate, same terroir, and ready to drink now while the grand vin continues to develop. Open the Pagodes tonight and put the two bottles of Cos away. That's a pretty good plan.

100 Points, James Suckling. "Muscular yet so well defined and toned," with deep, dense fruit, sandalwood and blackberry character. Suckling calls the finish "Extravagant. Magical."
100 Points, The Wine Independent. Lisa Perrotti-Brown finds profound crème de cassis, wild blueberry, black cherry, rose oil, Indian spices, crushed rock and dried lavender, with an opulent yet energetic palate, polished texture and tremendous length and depth.
100 Points, Vinous. Neal Martin highlights the wine's detailed black fruit and sublime balance, noting that extended decanting reveals the extraordinary Cos he had admired since first tasting it from barrel.
100 Points, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider. A spectacular combination of floral, smoke, cigar wrapper, black cherry and cassis, with extraordinary purity of fruit and silky, velvet textures. The finish is remarkably expansive and persistent.
99 Points, Jeb Dunnuck. Made from 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, a seamless, pure and elegant Cos loaded with crème de cassis, rocky minerality, tobacco leaf, violets and lead pencil: "an iron fist in a velvet glove."
