96 Points! The 2019 Saint Joseph Cuvée Revirand is all Syrah that was not destemmed and saw malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by 18 months in French oak. Just a thrilling Saint Joseph that pretty much stopped me in my tracks, it has ample red and black fruits, notes of leather, woodsmoke, iron, and pepper, full-bodied richness, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it showed more structure and depth with air. It can certainly be drunk today, but it will ideally be given 2-3 years in the cellar, and I’d be shocked if it didn’t evolve gracefully for another decade or more.

Based on the original Bigallet brothers' recipe, dating from 1875, this traditional orange-based French bitter is a deep, complex equivalent to the fabled Amer Picon. Ripe black fruit (there's some red fruit as well), tobacco leaf, damp earth, exotic flowers, and some chocolaty notes all emerge from the 2019 Clos De L'Oratoire, another beautiful wine from the Neipperg family and team. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and seamless on the palate, I love its mid-palate, it has gorgeous tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. This is clearly a great vintage for this cuvée. 100 Points! One of the greats in the vintage, the 2022 Château Montrose is deep ruby/purple-hued and has a massive perfume of sweet crème de cassis, sappy tobacco, and freshly sharpened pencils. With incredible purity and precision in its aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, powerful, yet still somehow elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Based on a classic blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, it spent 18 months in 60% new French oak. As I wrote during En Primeur, it has the essence of a Montrose-like character. While it’s not a massively backward or austere example of the château, it nevertheless deserves 10-12 years of bottle age and should have at least half a century of longevity. There is 14.5% alcohol this year, which is less than 2018. It has an extremely pure nose with black cherries and blueberry. Quite floral in style with hints of blood orange percolating through with time. The palate is very precise with exceptional mineralité and tension. Italian import consultant and brand manager for many significant Italian producers, Gino Della Porta, and his close friend, superstar-enologist Gian Luca Colombo founded Sette in 2017 with the purchase of a 5.8ha hill in Bricco di Nizza, in Nizza Monferrato. They join the new generation of driven young winegrowers who experiment with new and ancient techniques to express their vision of wine free from cultural and regional expectations while employing the most ecological methods possible. Certified organic since 2018 and in conversion to biodynamics in 2020, their terroir is composed of sandy limestone, chalk, and a wide variety of other siliceous geological formations on steep hills with great variations of soil grain.

The Sette Grignolino was destemmed and naturally fermented up to 18°C for 20-22 days with 2 daily punchdowns aged 9 months in Tava Amphoras with the first sulfites added after malolactic fermentation. It’s neither filtered nor fined.
