The Small Batch is 1792’s flagship offering. It is a high rye bourbon, which means that the composition of the grain is a high percentage of rye in relation to the corn that leads the bill. The mash bill itself is 75% corn, 15% rye and 10% malted barley -- using rye as the second most sizeable grain makes for a bolder, spicier bourbon. What we pick goes fresh into the still within hours of foraging. All the plants are sustainably picked by our full time forager, every day we distill. We take a lot of care that we don't adversely affect the areas we find them in. From the importer: It all started some three centuries ago when the first of Ichiro Akuto’s forefathers began making alcoholic beverages in Saitama Prefecture. His grandfather began making whisky in the mid-1940’s with Hanyu Distillery, whose focus on malt whiskies took off with the Japanese economic boom of the 1980s. However, when the bubble burst in the 1990s, so too did the first Japanese Whisky boom, leading Hanyu—like several other distillers—to shutter its doors. Ichiro saved his grandfather’s old inventory and subsequently released the Playing Card series.
