This Junmai sake from Banshu Ikkon is a beautifully lean structured sake, light bodied and linear, with the distinctive bright and spicy finish unique to brewmaster Yuichi Tsubosaka. While Kita Nishiki is a rice developed locally in Hyogo it is more characteristic of rice grown in the far north, with a firm grain that dissolves more slowly, producing sake of tight structure and clean flavors as opposed to the luscious rice types that made the area famous. It does retain a brightness of character unique to the region, and typical of all Banshu Ikkon sake.

94 Points! The 2007 Valpolicella Superiore from the celebrated Monte Lodoletta vineyard is rock-tight with a midnight black appearance and aromas that emerge with fierce determination. The fascinating aromatic medley includes dark spice, prune, Spanish cedar, tar, black licorice, balsam herb and blackberry tart. The mouthfeel is plush and rich with super-tight tannins that grip nervously to the finish. It has only started its bottle evolution and requires more time to soften and develop. 94 Points! The most mineral-driven of these new releases from Maugeri is the 2023 Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Praino Frontemare. This is a young winery with enormous promise ahead of it. Grapes for this 3,300-bottle release come from a vineyard site on the east side of the volcano that faces the sea and has steep stone terraces on sandy, mineral-rich soils and yellowish clay. The wine spends eight months on the fine lees (with no malolactic fermentation and no bâtonnage). The result offers salty flavors folded into white pomelo fruit and unripe peach.
