We crushed it with a couple of their brilliant Malbecs, then followed up with one of the better Cabernet values of the last decade, compliments of them. Why the heck is the 92-point Tapiz Cabernet Sauvignon Alta Collection Mendoza 2013 wine I mean, I’m pretty sure I could have found a home for this wine on its initial release, considering there’s not a whole lot of sub-$20, 92-point Cab in the market, made under the direct supervision of the former winemaker for Chateau Petrus. Well, actually, there’s only one. This one. The winery took a giant step up by hiring Jean-Claude Berrouet as a consulting enologist. From 1964-2007 he was the winemaker at a little operation in Pomerol called Chateau Petrus, Started in 2011, the Tapiz Alta Collection is meant to be their ‘cut above’ reserve level. When we think about it, we’re sure this one just ended up a ‘forgotten wine’ with the crush of folks who were gunning for the 2014 Tapiz Cabernet (another Winex fan fave while it lasted) Like I stated earlier, this is serious cab for the money, and truly ridiculous Cab with another 35% haircut off the Suggested Retail Price. James Suckling’s review, while concise, captures the mojo of this one, “Beautiful and solid with toasted oak, cedar and dried fruits. Full body, firm tannins and a savory finish. Needs time to soften. Better in 2017. 92 points.” “Beautiful” and “Better in 2017”. Both of those comments work for us. Only 40 cases…hurry….
