To all Best Winers,

Believe it or not, it’s still Rosé season.

Ham yearns for Rosé. Duck, no problem. Goose, of course!

So, if you really love your friends and family why not give them…

THE GREATEST ROSÉ EVER MADE

Or, in other words…

THE HIGHEST SCORING ROSÉ…EVER

I don’t make this stuff up. Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck, in the April, 2014 online version of the Wine Advocate, gave this wine 94 points, making it the highest scoring Rosé of all time from Wine Advocate and/or Wine Spectator.

Yes, I checked.

If you don’t buy this wine and serve it on your holiday table (great with latkes!) it will mean you don’t love your, uh, loved ones.

OK, you’re going to ask, how’s the wine? (Or, maybe not since the darn thing did rack up that monster score from a ‘higher authority’ than lil’ old us.)

The wine has a pretty salmon color. This isn’t one of those pink wines trying to be red wine, it definitely has a little more of a Provençal personality to its flavor profile. I loved the watermelon vibe to it, and the flowery accents that picked up with air.

Funny, when I was tasting the wine without knowing the blend, I thought it had more of a white wine personality.

I was (kind of) right, the blend here is an atypical 85% Grenache Gris, traditionally a white wine grape, though it has a pink skin, and 15% Syrah. That Grenache Gris is the secret weapon.  I think old vine Grenache Gris allows for greater concentration without sacrificing the lift and brightness, two qualities that make great Pink wine.

That Jean-Marc Lafage, he’s a clever one.

Jeb wrote, “…one of the best roses I’ve ever tasted, the 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Grand Cuvee Rose is lighter in color, yet is more serious and laser focused, with notions of rose petal, citrus, orange rind and cherries all emerging from the glass. A blend of 85% Grenache Gris and 15% Syrah, it’s medium-bodied, layered and brilliantly pure and classy, with serious length on the finish. In short, it’s an incredible bottle of rose that should not be missed!

This is indeed serious Rosé. The bottle picked up a head of steam after being left open, overnight, with no gas, cork or anything, always a very good sign.

I know you’re curious. I know you gotta have some. I couldn’t wait to pop the ‘cork’ (vino-lok, actually), and neither will you…

Rosé in December? Crazy as it sounds, why the heck not?
