  1. Castaño Solanera Viñas Viejas 2015
    WA92
Special Price $9.98 Regular Price $14.98
    Availability:In Stock
92 Points! The 2015 Solanera used to wear the ultimate Spanglish label, which said "Viñas Viejas of Monastrell" even if it was always a blend (in this vintage, the blend includes 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Garnacha Tintorera). The revamped 2015 has a completely different label that only keeps the "viñas viejas" moniker. In this wine, from the joint venture with U.S. importer Eric Solomon that started in 1999, they used part of full clusters and sourced the grapes from Casa Marta, a nine-hectare, head-pruned, dry-farmed plot on very stony soils in the north of Yecla at the foot of the Mount Arabí. It fermented in concrete vats and open-top barrels and matured in barrique, each variety separately, for some ten months, after which it was blended and bottled. This is the vintage of the big change in this wine, where, as with the majority of its siblings, there is better balance and more integrated oak, more freshness and better balance. The nose is quite captivating, especially after some time in the glass, when it starts developing some floral aromas, perfect ripeness, no warmth or alcohol and a powerful, yet terribly balanced palate with concentration and elegance, fine-grained tannins and clean, focused flavors. This is my favorite Solanera to date. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com Learn More
  2. Juan Gil Honoro Vera Monastrell Organic 2017
    VM90
    $7.98
    Availability:In Stock
90 Points! Vivid red. Pungent red berry preserve and cherry aromas are complicated by smoky mineral and floral notes. Appealing sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air but avoid jamminess. Finishes smooth and long, with gentle tannic grip and lingering spiciness. The bang for the buck here is pretty serious. (raised in stainless steel tanks) - Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media Learn More
  3. Casa Castillo Jumilla Vino de Finca 2016
    WA92
    $16.98
    Availability:In Stock

There is a new middle-of-the-range red, above the Monastrell and below the single-vineyard wines, already in its second vintage with the 2016. This 2016 Vino de Finca comes from the oldest vineyard (from the grapes that used to go to the Monastrell) and also from different parts within the estate. It's mainly Monastrell with some 5% Garnacha, fermented with part of full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in oak foudres for one year. This is incredibly aromatic and expressive, with floral notes that I don't often find in Monastrell, elegant, balanced, fresh ... simply unbelievable. It has an outstanding palate, with refined tannins and great length. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

  4. Casa Castillo Jumilla Las Gravas 2015
    WA94
    $26.98
    Availability:In Stock
94 Points!  The 2015 Las Gravas is a classic Mediterranean blend of Monastrell with 15% each Garnacha and Syrah, with 15% alcohol after fermenting with part of full clusters and indigenous grapes and aging in used oak barrels for 19 months. 2015 is the last vintage that Las Gravas has some Syrah, as it adds some sweet fruit he wants to avoid. However, it shows fresh within the balsamic profile, with plenty of rosemary and thyme notes combined with floral undertones and the character of the esparto grass and tree bark that are textbook deors of the variety. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

  6. Garzon Tannat Reserve Uruguay 2016
    JS92
    $14.98
    Availability:In Stock
92 Points! Iodine, ink, tar, crushed stones and dark plum essence. This has all the hallmarks of a fruity tannat, but it's in no way too much. It combines a lovely firm tannin backbone with tangy acidity, which carries all the way to the savory finish. Drink now. - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

  7. Casa Castillo Jumilla Monastrell Pie Franco 2015
    WA98
    $79.98
    Availability:In Stock
98 Points! The finest Monastrell in Spain and among the greatest reds in the country, the 2015 Pie Franco is named after the ungrafted vines ("pie franco" is the Spanish name for ungrafted) planted in 1942 on sandy and limestone-rich soils. It fermented with part of full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in used oak barrels for 18 months. I was blown away by this 2015, a vintage that combines incredible finesse, floral notes of violets and even white flowers with the Mediterranean character of the zone, while it’s structured and has the backbone to develop for a very long time in bottle. This single-vineyard Monastrell seems to be going from strength to strength… Where is the limit? Awesome! It’s one of the greatest Monastrell wines in the world and among the elite from Spain. I consider this a true bargain for the quality it delivers. 5,200 bottles were filled in June 2017. - Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

  8. Cruse Wine Company Tannat Alder Springs Vineyard 2015
    VM90
    $44.98
    Availability:In Stock
90 Points!  Michael Cruse's 2015 Tannat Alder Springs is bold and intense, and yet the huge tannins typical of this variety have been largely tamed. A host of earthy, savory notes add aromatic complexity to the deeply expressive, varietal fruit. The 2015 is bold and rustic (there is only so much one can do with Tannat) and yet all the elements are beautifully balanced. The Tannat was vinified in concrete and aged in barrel. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

  9. Primitivo Quiles Monastrell "Cono 4" 2014
    $9.98
    Availability:In Stock
The Cono 4 bottling from Primitivo Quiles is comprised entirely of Monastrell, with the 2014 vintage coming in at the customary 14.5 percent octane for this cuvée. The wine is deep, ripe and gently raisiny on both the nose and palate, but also complex, as it wafts from the glass in a mix of black cherries, hung game, garrigue, a bit of pepper, sultana raisins and a good base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and impressively transparent for this hot region, with a good core, sound acids and fine focus and grip on the long, moderately tannic and nicely balanced finish. This carries its octane very nicely. - John Gilman, View from the Cellar

  10. Castano Solanera Vinas Viejas 2013
    WA92
Special Price $9.98 Regular Price $16.00
    Availability:In Stock
92 Points! 2013 Solanera is a “Vinas Viejas” that differs from the Castano (100% Monastrell), as this blend is 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. Another difference from the Hecula is that it was aged equal parts in tank and the other half in French oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit–the wine just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth. - Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com
