  3. Izadi Rioja El Regalo 2014
    JS91
    WA91
Special Price $16.98 Regular Price $32.98
    Availability:In Stock
91 Points! The 2014 El Regalo is named after the estate in the village of Villabuena where the old-vine Tempranillo grapes used for it are grown. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in oak vats with half of the volume going through malolactic in those vats and the other half in new barriques. The wine matured in the best barriques money can buy (50% French, 50% American) for some 20 months. It's ripe, heady, juicy and with a lactic component that gives it a commercial profile. The palate is full-bodied, chewy and tannic. Contrary to what many might think, the younger wine is also the most expensive. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com Learn More

  9. Altovinum Evodia Garnacha Old Vines 2017
    JD91
    $8.98
    Availability:In Stock
91 Points!  Another project between Eric Solomon and the Roussillon’s Jean-Marc Lafage, the 2017 Evodia comes from higher elevation vineyards and is mostly Garnacha (there’s 5% Syrah) aged in a mix of tank and demi-muids. This deep ruby/purple colored is a gorgeous, naked expression of Grenache that just knocks it out of the park. Blackberries, blueberries, pepper, licorice and hints of asphalt all emerge from this plump, sexy, opulent, and shockingly concentrated wine that has incredible charm and character. It’s the best 10-dollar bottle of wine I've tasted in years. - Jeb Dunnuck

  11. Cune Monopole Clasico Rioja Blanco Seco 2014
    JS93
    WA91
    $21.98
    Availability:In Stock
91 - 93 Points!  I was thinking "I wish this wine went back to the more serious bottlings of 40 and 50 years ago..." when tasting the regular Monopole, and they showed me this 2014 Monopole Clasico, which is a wine to celebrate the centenary of the brand (registered in 1914) and it blew me away. They have produced this wine like it was done in the good old times, adding some Manzanilla Sherry (yes, yes, you read it correctly); they top up the Viura with Manzanilla purchased from the Hidalgo family of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Not only did they add the wine, they purchased the wine in bota, so the wine is also aged in Sherry casks. It does have an amazing nose with notes of sea breeze, iodine and esparto grass. The palate is extremely tasty, but at the same time is light and fresh, with the acidity of Viura and the kick and pungency from Manzanilla. Awesome! This will be bottled in a couple of months, but I couldn't help reporting on it. It will wear the old Monopole label. It won't be a one off for the centenary, they will keep producing it every vintage. Welcome back, Monopole! 30,000 bottles produced in this first vintage.  Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate #226, August 2016

  12. Jorge Ordonez & Co Moscatel Botani Old Vines Sierras de Malaga 2015
    WA91
    $14.98
    Availability:In Stock
91 Points!  A steal that I’ve been recommending for a number of years is the 2015 Botani Moscatel Old Vines. Totally dry and made from vines planted in 1946, 1968 and 1975, from the incredibly steep slate and quartz hillsides of Malaga, this is fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel, where it’s aged and bottled after eight months sur lie. An incredibly gorgeous flowery bouquet alone would be reason to spend the $18.00 for this medium-bodied, super-fragrant and seductive, crisp, elegant wine. The old vines, the beautiful floral notes and stunning, delicate tropical fruits that the Muscat of Alexandria varietal (the oldest clone in the Muscat family) produces, are just something to behold. Not meant for aging, but for drinking in its first year of life, so take advantage of it. For those interested: this is fermented in total stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and bottled early to preserve its incredible aromatics.  Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate #226, August 2016

  13. Olivier Riviere Tinto El Cadastro Arlanza 2012
    JS91
    WA94
    VM92
    $34.98
    Availability:In Stock
94 Points!  The 2012 Vinas del Cadastro is a blend of four vineyards in the village of Covarrubias (Burgos), planted with old Tempranillo vines; and as with all old vineyards there are some other varieties interplanted in the field, in this case some 5% Garnacha. 50% of full clusters were used for the vinification in open plastic bins with indigenous yeasts. In 2012, Rivière did a lighter extraction, as the grapes had enough tannins, and what you needed was to get a balanced juice. The different plots were matured in 300- and 600-liter French oak casks separately, then blended after almost two years and kept in vat for five-six months before being bottled. The characteristic of this wine is always a floral, exuberant and expressive nose (a character that Riviere think comes for a plot called La Tizona), but with volume, nice acidity and much finer tannins than in previous vintages, which makes it approachable yet powerful. There are fine spices and something earthy, a little mealy and malty, really showy and expressive. This is an elegant, really impressive Arlanza, drinkable now and with the stuffing, balance and acidity to develop nicely in bottle. This is the finest and better balanced Vinas del Cadastro so far. This is an incredible value for money. Some 3,700 were filled in May 2015.  Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate #221, October 2015

  14. Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Vinas Viejas Picaro 2013
    WA92
    VM91
    $26.98
    Availability:In Stock
92 Points!  The 2013 Pícaro Tinto is Tempranillo with 5% Albillo from a mixture of north facing vineyards in the Sotillejo quarter of La Aguilera, the village of Burgos where they have all of their vineyards. They do not own a destemmer machine, so all of their wines ferment in full clusters and always with indigenous yeasts, in this case in cement vats. This 2013 had a shorter aging in barrel than the previous years and they also used a smaller percentage of new oak. This part of the village produces wines of great energy; the nose is fresh with an Atlantic, cool, herbal twist, representing the vintage, a year with a shorter vegetative cycle in the shape of red and black wild berries with some floral hints. This is an accessible, fresh and quite fruit-driven Ribera from a cool place in a cool vintage. The oak is very nicely integrated, with some spices and some grainy, slightly chalky tannins. Ideal for food. 8,000 bottles.  Luis Gutierrez, The Wine Advocate #221
