The late Denis Malbec’s talents are fully showcased in the Acumen Red Wine Mountainside Napa Valley 2012. It’s a blend of 70% Cabernet, 27% Merlot and 3% Cab Franc and we dare say we haven’t experienced many (maybe none?) from this appellation that boast this kind of lavish texture and sweet, creamy, ‘trophy-style’ fruit. Layers of black currant, with spice, mineral, and vanilla aspects, fat and sappy in the mouth, with well disguised tannins underneath. The wine isn’t classically Napa Trophy-style ‘big’, Denis’ time at Latour certainly ingraining the wine with polish and a subtle savory streak underneath.
