93 Points! Informed by high-maturity Pinot Noir sourced from a vineyard in the village of Aÿ-Champagne, which is pressed slowly and gently, delivering a subtle pink hue, and complemented by Chardonnay from Avize, Doyard’s 2019 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Millésime Œil de Perdrix has turned out very well. Vinified in 228-liter barrels of different ages and disgorged in October 2023 with three grams per liter dosage, it wafts from the glass with aromas of orange zest, roses, sweet berries and spices. The entry-level white is the 2019 Blanco de la Casa, a blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc from Gualtallary, 40% Sémillon from La Consulta and 20% Chardonnay from La Carrera, which gives the wine a touch of energy. It comes from a dry and cool vintage that resulted in limited alcohol and good acidity. He wanted to avoid the varietal character and have a blend this year that is really vibrant, with pungent acidity and minerality. All wines fermented with natural yeasts and no acidification. He looks for high-altitude vineyards for the whites. It's sharp and really tasty, bottled unoaked, so it comes through as complex, integrated and textured. It should develop nicely in bottle. 4,000 bottles produced. The second wine of this great château, the 2021 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild offers up a mini-Mouton-like nose of pure cassis, graphite, and spicy oak and hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a deep, layered mid-palate, plenty of fruit and richness, and almost velvety tannins. Has the graphite edge of the appellation, waves of cocoa bean, liqourice and smoked earth, and the balance of 2019. 96 Points! The 2022 Durfort-Vivens is a wild, exotic wine that very much shows the natural opulence of the year. Super-ripe dark red/purplish fruit, pomegranate and sweet spice are front and center. There’s a bit more Merlot in this year’s blend, and that seems to come through in the wine’s overall fruit intensity. The final blend is project to be 70% new oak and 30% amphora, but the sample I tasted was only taken from oak components, as the wine had only been racked into amphora shortly prior to this tasting. Heavily based on Oger (around 40% of the blend), with the remainder coming from Oiry, Cramant and Avize, it’s already expressive, offering aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, bread and fresh hazelnut. The village 2021 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra was produced with 75% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the rest white grapes, mostly Viura from vineyards in the middle and higher part of the village. It fermented partly with full clusters and matured 50/50 in concrete and 500- and 600-liter barrels in their cave. This feels quite serious, with ripeness and power, slowly revealing more elegant notes and some floral hints, with an earthy touch. It feels like the grapes ripened thoroughly in the longer cycle and developed plenty of nuances. In comparison to the Grand Village, the 2020 Les Perrières De Lafleur comes from more limestone soils, and the blend is more Cabernet Franc-dominated, checking in as 71% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) and the rest Merlot. It has an absolutely head-turning bouquet of red and blue fruits, fresh tobacco, truffle, and spring flowers, and it shows this incredible sense of chalky minerality on the palate. Focused and medium to full-bodied, with both power and richness, it shows a much more finessed and elegant profile compared to the bigger, more opulent Grand Village.
