From more than 100-year-old vines, the 2023 Ürziger Würzgarten In der Kranklei Riesling Auslese Alte Reben (Gold Capsule) is from a 2.2-hectare plot in the south-facing, terraced cru on red slate. Deep, clear and pure on the fragrant yet intense and refreshing nose that shows lemongrass, ginger and herbal as well as saline slate aromas. Very generous and lush yet also refined and filigreed on the palate, this is a savory and stimulating saline Auslese with fine, crystalline acidity and candied lemon and grapefruit aromas on the long finish. There are 140 grams per liter of residual sugar, which do not taste extraordinarily sweet but round and generous. The grapes were picked in early October with 15% of botrytis. 8% stated alcohol. The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (Gold Capsule) was picked as early as September 20 at 115° Oechsle and with 20% botrytis berries and opens with a generously intense and concentrated bouquet with ripe, rich and lush yellow fruit and lemon aromas intertwined with flinty as well saline notes of crushed slate. Generous yet refined and very delicate on the palate, this is a fruit-intense and enormously saline and refined Auslese with highly delicate acidity and the finesse and fleshy fruit from 30- to 40-year-old vines raised on single poles in the second étage of the cru that was never consolidated. There has never been any drought stress here. In 2023, there was a low yield of just 20 hectoliters per hectare, and 500 liters were made (plus 30 liters of Trockenbeerenauslese). 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. 94 Points! The 2023 Chardonnay Willamette Valley opens with a gentle whiff of sweet spice that gives way to mineral-infused nectarine and a hint of sage as it blossoms in the glass. Rounded textures and ripe orchard fruit sweep across the palate. Saline concentration and nuances of tart citrus add form toward the close. It offers a silky, rounded feel with notes of fresh pear, wet stones, lime oil, floral perfume, and hints of almond. Medium to full-bodied, it has a refreshing spine of acidity and a salty, mineral texture. There’s concentration and extract, although it remains leaner than the Black Label. 94 Points! The 2020 Chardonnay Seven Springs Vineyard was picked on September 22, after the smoke from the wildfires in Willamette Valley cleared. It was fermented and matured for around 11 months in 50% new oak. It has intense aromas of peach, honey, allspice and toast, flavors that are echoed on the expansive palate. It has a creamy, gently grippy texture and a matchstick-laced finish. It's a great effort in a very challenging vintage. Drink it over the next few years. 93 Points! I tasted the grey label version of the 2020 Chardonnay Seven Springs, which opens with flinty reduction, along with savory herbs of chive, green apple, and lemon verbena. The Argonauts of the Gold Rush were charmed and captivated by Sam Brannan’s claim of gold in the American River. His proclamation proved the catalyst to a new era in American history, accelerating Westward expansion. For this Second Edition of The Claim, our pioneering distiller Rita Hansen pulled from these special stocks to create a magnificent blend of the rarest and most unique California Brandies. The Second Edition of The Claim has a lush aroma of plum and cherry, with notes of dried fruit leather, apple, brown spice, and toasted oak. The deep red fruit flavors carry over to the palate, complemented by layers of dried fig, apple pie, and baking spice. The long finish is rich and elegant, with seamlessly integrated fruit and oak.

A vibrant and pure Chardonnay with great energy, the medium gold 2021 Chardonnay Three Jacks Vineyard is lifted with flint and dusty earth, as well as lime zest, white pepper, and green apple. Medium-bodied, it has ripe, sweet fruit throughout, and a balanced, fresh feel. Offering remarkable evenness in its balance, with floral notes of white flowers and lemon curd continuing through to its long finish, this is my favorite of the whites in the lineup. 98 Points! Medium gold-hued, the 2024 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Fontaine Blanc offers rich, complex aromatics of ripe orchard fruits, white flowers, almond paste, and hints of fresh croissant. It's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, and it’s beautifully layered and textured, with integrated acidity and a blockbuster of a finish. Pure gold in white Rhône, I wouldn't push the aging curve here and would drink bottles over the coming 5-7 years, possibly a decade. Don't let that deter you, though. Incredible, high-quality Longfinned Tuna Belly. The gold standard. Open a tin and serve on some buttered baguette and watch it vaporize. Canned in Galicia Spain. 

Sugar and spice and everything nice. This chocolate-infused bitter boasts a powerful, toasted coffee kick that livens up whiskey and rum, alike. It’s nutty and peppery but with the ghost of sweetness.

98 Points! This is exuberant, concentrated and luscious. Full of blood orange, nectarine, saffron, touches of carmalised ginger, truffle and crème brûlée. A seesaw of zesty acidity and luscious sweetness, this is a beautiful wine that still has decades ahead of it. Owned by the Lur Saluces family at the time, this clearly shows why Yquem stands in its own category in the appellation. - Jane Anson, Decanter Magazine, 2021

97 Points! Pale to medium gold-amber in color, the 1990 d'Yquem charges out with powerful notes of cigar box, toffee, honey-coated walnuts, and dried apricots. After a little swirling, the nose reveals fragrant scents of sandalwood, candied orange peel, and nutmeg. The palate is rich and unctuous, packed with spicy layers and a decadently oily texture with plenty of freshness to balance, finishing long and opulent. This Rosé bursts at the seams with spring strawberry, pomegranate, candy watermelon, and white grapefruit. This wine goes great with showing skin because, duh, that’s always in.

Silhouette is enjoyed straight or on the rocks; served with water (both cold and hot); served in a chu-hi (or shochu highball) mixed with soda and fruit juice; or served with oolong tea or matcha tea. Silhouette can also be a versatile base for low-alcohol cocktails.
