In the glass, the nose jumps forth loaded with spicy red and black fruits. On the palate, all of the promise of the nose is delivered with the fruit character persistent from the cool black fruit core to the more jubilant, redder fruit center to the wine at large, with plenty volume to the flavors delivered. If someone told you this cost $50, you’d taste the wine and look at the (single vineyard) Napa Appellation, and have no reason to question anything. The kicker here is it is less than half that ($25)! Same as it ever was, this is one of the pre-eminent deals on Napa Valley Cabernet.
91 Points! Moving to the reds, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the northern end of Knights Valley and is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% each of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, brought up in 30% new French oak. Savory notes of dried herbs, cedar box, spice, and red and black fruits all give way to a medium to full-bodied, charming, nicely balanced Cabernet Sauvignon that offers serious bang for the buck. I suspect it will keep for a decade or more. - Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
The search for Cabernet values can take us some pretty far-flung locales, in this case the Gilgal Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 comes from the Upper Galilee mountain range. Sitting atop the mountain range, the innovatively designed winery is committed to revitalizing the region’s rich history of winemaking. Over 2,000 years ago, these mountains, among Israel’s highest at more than 1,000 meters above sea level, was a choice location for the cultivation of quality grapevines.
91+ Points! The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold and pungent in the glass. An explosion of aromatics and fruit that makes a strong opening statement. Savory herb, leather, smoke, tobacco and licorice add shades of nuance to the dark fleshed fruit. The firm tannins need time to soften, but the 2015 is unquestionably a winner. Moreover, from a value perspective, the 2015 is impossible to beat within the context of CA Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields are down a whopping 50%. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
96 Points! The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is dark, inky and voluptuous. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate and cloves are all amped up in this unctuous, inky Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. There is more than enough fruit intensity to fill out the wine's ample, full-bodied frame. This powerhouse Cabernet is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
Winery notes: All of the grapes for the HRW series wines come from our 114-acre Napa Valley vineyard. The average production in our Cabernet blocks is between 1.5 and 2.5 tons per acre.
Most of the vines on the Hendry ranch grow on thin stony soil between 200 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay (the northern end of the San Francisco Bay) moderate the climate. The Cabernet vines are spaced 7’ x 5’, cordon trained and spur pruned. The clones are U.C. Davis 4, 7 and 15, grafted to St. George roots. A seven-foot vertical trellis system supports the cordon and the canopy.
The 2016 HRW Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for 18 months in French Oak barrels, 10% of which were new. The remaining barrels were one and two-year-old barrels used in our Cabernet program. Learn More

96 Points! The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense, pliant and wonderfully expressive. Ric Forman's wines are always on the restrained side, but the 2015 packs a good bit of punch. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, sage, mint, and rose petal overtones all add to the wine's precision and nuance. In 2015, Forman took in fruit from Thorevilos, which he co-manages with David Abreu, but ultimately decided to add that juice to the Cabernet Sauvignon rather than bottle it separately. Dollops of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec round out the blend. This is one of the classiest wines of the vintage. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media Learn More
