Pothiers Côtes Roannaise Gamay Clos du Puy 2017
From basically the center of France, this old vines cuvee of Gamay Saint-Romain (slightly different than the Gamay in Beaujolais), was planted 80 years ago and is now farmed with organic and biodynamic methods on a terroir of clay and granite soils. A 1.7-hectare walled vineyard, situated at an altitude of 515 meters, facing east. Ploughing, natural grass cover crops, debudding, leaf thinning as well as harvesting by hand are all practiced at this estate, located at the foot of the Massif Central. Vinification: 75% de-stemmed, maceration for 18 days, some punching down of the cap, and maturation in 1-to-5-year-old, 500-litre barrels for 11 months. This is burly yet gorgeously textured Gamay with terrific purity! A must-try for Beaujolais nerds....
