To all Wine Exchangers,
Miss the MCK? No worries, here’s another double 96-pointer from the SAME winemaker!

Many of you don’t know Brennon Leighton but you certainly know his wines.  He’s the Director of Winemaking at K Vintners, working with proprietor Charles Smith to craft some of the finest wines not just in Washington, but the world.

Brennon also makes a small amount of wine under his own label, utilizing unique sites in Washington he discovered during his years as K Vintners man on the ground as well as his previous gigs working for Chateau Ste. Michelle (you gotta start somewhere, right?) and Efeste, working with Chris Upchurch of DeLille.

In this case, Brennon is focusing on the Olsen Brothers Vineyard, located on the Northwest bend of the Yakima River as it turns North at Red Mountain. The elevation averages about 1000 feet and the soils are sandy with broken basalt.

Brennon makes his B Leighton Syrah Olsen Brothers Vineyard Columbia Valley 2016 in the same facility and in pretty much the same fashion as he does that Motor City Kitty.  The wine is harvested at a low yield of 2.8 tons per acre, 100% whole cluster pressed, native yeast fermented, and then aged in 100% neutral French oak puncheons for 18 months. Easy.
The result? Another DOUBLE 96-point masterpiece you can own for a song….

From Jeb Dunnuck: “The 2016 Syrah comes from a site in the Yakima Valley that was planted by Leighton. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by classic Syrah notes of dark berry fruits, smoke tobacco, olive tapenade, and ground pepper. Medium to full-bodied, with both freshness and richness, it’s impeccably balanced, with beautiful fruit and a great finish. It’s another seriously good wine from Brennon that delivers the goods. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years. 96 points

From JamesSuckling.com: “Super fragrant and attractive aromas of wild berries, spices and pepper, as well as dark stones and orange-zest nuances. This has exceptionally defined fruit and length. Really superior definition and concentration are what sets this apart. Tastes of dark cherries, blood plums and dark chocolate with a weave of fine spice and pepper. Plenty here already, but much more to come. 96 points.”

There’s even less of this than there was of the Kitty…

Happy Hunting…
