Since then, the Schiopetto stable has become one of our top-selling Italian white wines…every year.
The 2017’s from Schiopetto may be even MORE revelatory than usual. Why? Simply put, it is one of the few recent vintages that was not a vintage of the century. Issues early in the growing season combnine3d with periods of hot and cold and intermittent inclement weather to create a scenario where the grapes didn’t really know what to do! Vineyard husbandry was essential and, the great vineyard guys, though they made less wine, produced some legend stuff.
Friulano is one of our favorite grapes in the region and the Schiopetto Friulano Collio 2017 brilliantly savaged our palates again. Textbook, with brilliant fruit that charges across the palate, a touch of minerality and salinity in the finish leaving the palate ready for the next sip or bite.
James Suckling had his mind blown as well, noting, “…Incredible aromas of cloves, nutmeg, peaches, pears and cooked apples. Yet, always so refined and perfumed. Full-bodied, dense and very tight and focused. A fabulous bottle here. Drink or hold. 95 points.”
And, if you’re feeling sassy, Schiopetto has decided to take Friulano ‘next level’ with a new, ultra-limited bottling they simply call ‘M’. This wine is known in the winery as “Il Mario”, named for the founder. It is the best Friulano in the house, sourced from vines planted in 1954. The vines were planted on the best southern exposure and the wine is only produced in stainless steel tanks in the best vintages.
We have a smidge of both the 2016 and 2017 that the winery graciously allocated to us.
Of the Schiopetto Friulano Collio M 2016, James Suckling correctly notes, “This is extremely smoky on the nose with flint and gunpowder. Dried apple, lemon and pear character. Full body, dense and powerful. Yet always lively and dancing in the palate. Crazy finish. One of Italy's top whites. Made from vines planted in 1954. Drink now. 98 points.”
And the Schiopetto Friulano Collio M 2017 follows suit, “The transparency to this is mesmerizing with fantastic depth and energy. It’s full-bodied yet driven and focused with subtle peach-skin, apple, white-pepper, crushed-stone and mineral character. Long finish. Tight and precise. Drink or hold. 98 points.”
