To all Wine Exchangers,
I’d have to think that the Winex award for ‘Bestest Most Ridiculous Value in Chianti over a 20 year period’ would have to go to the Masi family and Fattoria Basciano.

The Masi family have been making wine for three generations and, from the beginning, the leading philosophy which has distinguished their work has been the same: producing wines with an excellent quality/price relationship.   Literally, for over 100 years. Amazing, refreshing to see and I’d say forward-thinking but when you’ve been doing it for a century, well….

Fattoria di Basciano has been owned by the Masi family since the beginning of 1900. It is located right in the heart of the Chianti Rufina area, on the top of a hill overlooking the Argomenna valley on one side, and the right bank of the Sieve river on the other.
The vineyards are at an elevation of nearly 1000ft above sea level, lying on a very stony soil, locally known as "Galestro". The micro-climate is ideal for the ripening of the grapes. It is dry and breezy, marked by low rainfall and a remarkable range of night and day temperature in summertime.

The wines have never been anything less than delicious and have always been a great deal, no matter the vintage!  The Masi family’s wines had previously graced the cover of our printed Stock Report more than once, and I fondly remember taking home and enjoying bottles of their 1990 Chianti Rufina as a starving student.

Funny enough, 25 years later, I’m still doing it…some things never change…thankfully.

The Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Rufina 2016 is the ‘basic’ wine from the family, composed of 95% Sangiovese 95% and 5% Colorino.  This forward-thinking, value-driven winery hasn’t ‘caved’ like a lot of the big boys, who use wood chips or staves in steel tanks.  Nope, the Masi family ages their Chianti in French oak barrels used one or two years, for 12 months before bottling.  That’s the same aging regimen you’ll see from the greats like Felsina.

As expected, the family turned in a superlative performance in 2016, its clear for this wine, as well as Selvapiana’s 2016, that the zone had something of a vintage-of-a-lifetime in 2016.  I’ve tasted probably 20 vintages of this wine and dare I say this is the finest yet?  I can recall no better bottling of this wine.

In 2016 the wine is a bit of a powerhouse for the price, deep, dark, yet seamless, with the fleshiness of Rufina but a finer structure than usual, more polished tannins, yet vibrant with that ‘Sangio’ acidity.  Damn, I’m getting thirsty just writing this…

It once again went off the value charts with the critics.

James Suckling awarded it 93 points.  For a wine at this price that’s nothing short of remarkable (well, until you taste it and discover why).  He writes, “Plenty of black-cherry and bitter-chocolate character here and, on the palate, there’s a lovely combination of bright fruit, crisp acidity and well-crafted, moderately dry tannins that give it a long and lively finish. 93 points.”

And the now-stingy Wine Spectator threw a monster (again, for the price) 91-point score at this gem, remarking, “A vibrant core of black cherry, black currant, cedar and tobacco flavors is framed by refined, if dusty, tannins in this red. In need of a bit of polishing in the bottle. Shows fine length.”

In short, at $11.98 a bottle this has to represent one of the most incredible Chianti deals we’ve ever sold, even eclipsing the greats from this property in 1990, 1995 and 1997.  Chianti fans rejoice, times have never been better.  Happy Hunting….
