To all Wine Exchangers,
For those of you going through Esprit de Pavie withdrawal…fresh off the boat is Gerard Perse’s beautifully made 2014 and it’s a stunner once again!

As Bordeaux fans know, Gerard Perse is one of the uncompromising types that makes our whole ‘buy smaller wines from top talents’ theory work.  His Chateau Pavie has produced ‘lights out’ quality since he purchased the estate over 20 years ago (time flies), including five Wine Advocate 100 pointers as well as 100 points from James Suckling as well as Jeb Dunnuck.  His other wines like Bellevue Mondotte, Pavie Decesse, and Monbousquet have also been in the 95+ club most every vintage of his ownership.  Gerard and his team have the know-how to bring out the best in the terroir that they have, and they have some fabulous terroir to work with.

When the 2014 Esprit de Pavie showed up on a Bordeaux negociant’s list after our success with the 2010, our course was clear, we had to check it out. The quality, flair, and depth of this wine, for the price was again simply amazing.  Because Gerard is such a perfectionist, he didn’t even make a 2013 of this, his least-expensive offering, as he felt the vintage wasn’t good enough. So, we have been anxiously waiting on this wine for two years and are jazzed to finally have the opportunity to present it to you.

The Esprit de Pavie 2014 comes from a combination of Gerard’s vineyards but much of the fruit is coming from his younger vines at Chateau Pavie itself.  When he bought Pavie in the late 90’s, he started replanting the vineyard.  In California, juice from 10-year-old vines magically morphs into $100+ wines.  For Gerard, such juice is not ready for ‘prime time’ and does not have the depth and nuance to go into Pavie.  So… he created this wine.  In addition to Pavie fruit, he uses grapes from his other highly respected properties along the famous Cote.  A reasonable analogy would be ‘leftovers’…from Spago, Eleven Madison, French Laundry, or Per Se.
The blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon is an opaque blue/black in color and has abundant notes of forest floor, spring flowers, black raspberry and blueberry liqueur in the aromatics along with hints of espresso and white chocolate. The wine is beautifully constructed, full, and rich, with great structure, wonderful texture and great palate presence with its perfectly weighted fruit.

It is everything you would expect from a producer of this caliber…except for the price.  Which for us is the best part of this story.  We get to offer you this incredible red, crafted by Gerard Perse and the team at the 100pt. producing Chateau Pavie, for only $19.98!

As with the previous Esprit de Pavie we sold buckets of, we encourage you to be quick on the trigger, every vintage of this wine we have offered has instantly sold out and there’s actually less wine in 2014.

Happy Hunting…
