To all Wine Exchangers,
Certainly, many of you are familiar with the Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero Pruno, the second wine of Finca Villacreces and one of the best deals from one of the best parts of the Ribera del Duero.  Given that, we’ll tell the background story as succinctly as we can and promise that, in a series that has provided some of the best deals from this part of the world, this offering represents one of the best.

So, as we said, Pruno is something of a second wine for Finca Villacreces, a well-respected estate in its own right, but as importantly a remarkably well-situated property as well.  Villacreces, you see, is located in the primo part of the Ribera, something the locals call ‘the golden mile’, considered to be the finest stretch of vineyard land in the appellation due to its terrific soils and proximity to the Duero River...on the proper side. It’s a fine line in the world of soils, exposure, slopes, drainage and elevation as to what is ‘the best’, but this is definitely the top of the heap as far as location goes.  Their next-door neighbor, against whose vineyards Villacreces’ abut, is none other than Vega Sicilia, not only the ‘top dog’ in the Ribera del Duero, but one of the world’s greatest wines, period.
Villacreces Pruno is typically a ripe, juicy version from the region and provides something of an extraordinary value as well.  It’s all relative, for sure.  A bottle of Vega Sicilia Unico sells for upwards of $300-350.  Their ‘second’ wine, Valbuena, costs about $150.  Now granted not everyone can command those kinds of prices unless they have a pretty serious reputation.  Even the vineyard from which Pruno is actually sourced is used to produce a wine with a $70 price tag. These days the ‘first’ wine from Villacreces sells for $35 or more, best case.  This Villacreces Pruno 2015 is typically found in the $16-20 range ($15.99 Is the lowest price on wine-searcher.com), and that represents a pretty sensational value given the prized real estate from which this comes.
The reviews are once again very supportive of this wine as one to be considered by virtue of its imminent drinkability and exciting price point.  Of the 2015, Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez says in his February, 2017 review, The just-bottled 2015 Pruno is a young, fruit-driven and straightforward blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from young and older vines in their 63-hectare organically-farmed estate, located around the winery by the river Duero. 2015 was a very warm year and the wine is ripe without excess, juicy and tasty, with a minty and chocolate touch perhaps from the one year it spent in oak barrels...90 points.”

Wine Spectator also had it at 90 points with comments, “Rich yet lively, this red delivers ripe flavors of boysenberry and black plum, backed by leafy and orange peel notes and a minerally, smoky finish. Ripe tannins are well-integrated and crisp. Fruity acidity keeps this fresh. Drink now through 2025.”

Finally, this killer value (at its normal price) scored a big 92 points from James Suckling, who wrote, Very ripe, bright, black fruits and tar aromas pour from the glass. Big and juicy, but the tannins are stronger than the sweet stuff. Long, clean finish and a lot of potential.”

The bottom line is that, clearly, the wine itself is a juicy mouthful with broad appeal, the pedigree of the estate is beyond question, and at the going rate of $20 delivers a pretty enticing value given the juice.  But we are going to take it a step further

Thanks to some inexplicable discount from the purveyor for reasons we don’t know, we are able to put this wine on the proverbial block at 40% off its retail, bringing it down to a remarkable $11.98!!  The only downside is that we only have what we have, so we suggest a quick trigger.  Good hunting on this tasty, versatile Ribera.
