To all Wine Exchangers,

As all of you know, Friday is Bordeaux day and trust us… we have some great offerings coming down the pike.  But today is special…  something we haven’t seen in our 38-year history.  A rarity that even we have a hard time believing!  But it’s a crazy wine world and we’re only living in it.

Chateau Laroque (WA 95-97, JD 95-97, WS 92-95) is truly one of the most beautiful estates in Saint Emilion, located on the famous limestone cote.  I’ve passed this estate many times and always wondered… why are they not making some of the best wines in the appellation?  But usually when you see estates like this, wine is an afterthought as the owners have bigger fish to fry.  These estates are owned by the super-rich… a place to spend a few weeks out of the year and make wine good enough to give to friends and sell exclusively to one specific agent. While I have geeked out on the terroir of this estate over the years, I have never thought I would see the day this chateau stepped up its game… until now.

In 2015, the estate decided it was time to start producing serious wines and hired David Suire as Director.  David is extremely experienced in the Right Bank, working with Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt. That knowledge as well was their assistance has really turned this estate around in a very short time.

The 2018 is the major turning point…

The Wine Advocate writes: Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Laroque is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant black cherries, wild blueberries and blackberry preserves scents with hints of crushed rocks, underbrush and violets plus a waft of Marmite toast. Full-bodied and jam-packed with bright, crunchy black and blue fruits, it has a firm line of ripe, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing very long and layered. Impressive! Being aged in oak barriques, 50% new, the blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 95-97 Points

Jeb Dunnuck gave it the same 95-97 point score...which is also the same score he gave to the $200+ La Fleur Petrus!  He writes: A blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc representing just 41% of the total production, the 2018 Château Laroque is still resting in barrels and oak tanks. Its deep purple color is followed by a classy bouquet of ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, licorice, and crushed rocks. Deep, medium to full-bodied, with beautiful mid-palate and ripe, silky tannins, it's a beautiful success for the estate, which appears to be firing on all cylinders today thanks to the talented team of David Suire and Nicolas Thienpont!

Folks, this is the biggest Wine Advocate no-brainer we’ve seen from Bordeaux in a long time… if not forever.  We literally cannot think of a higher score at a lower price from Wine Advocate for a Bordeaux futures offering...ever.
