To all Wine Exchangers,
Wow, these Decanter World Wine Award tastings are delivering some seriously tasty results. What a great opportunity to showcase some seriously great wines by putting them in front of some of the world’s finest palates to sort through.

As we’ve stated previously, this is not the wine competition at the Hoboken Fair or Sheboygan Cheese festival.  The Decanter World Wine Awards is chock full of serious judges with serious experience judging serious wines.  The results have been surprisingly spot-on with the judge’s assessments.

The latest surprise?  This compelling Cabernet Sauvignon from an exciting new (old) source.

Scattered Peaks is a super-premium spin on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a mix of Napa’s finest vineyards. The wine is elegantly crafted by wine industry veteran Derek Benham and legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Joel Aiken. Joel spent 27-years making the world-famous red wines at Rutherford's legendary Beaulieu Vineyards, including several of the finest BV Georges de Latour Reserves ever.

Joel left BV in 2010 to get into the consulting business. And why not?  With his expertise and knowledge of Napa’s finest vineyards it seems this cat could make some serious coin making other wineries viable forces to be reckoned with.

Scattered Peaks refers to the vineyards dotted across the world-renowned Napa Valley. The Scattered Peaks Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2015 is uber-classic in its presentation, what real Napa Valley Cabernet actually tastes like as opposed to some of the, ahem, ‘crafted’ wines we’re seeing from Napa these days.  It offers intense black and red fruit aromas bolstered by hints of mountain sage and a touch of anise. On the palate, dark brooding fruit flavors of black cherry and cassis mingle with essence of black licorice and violets as well as espresso and dark chocolate notes.

The gang at Decanter tasted this one blind, along with a group of other Napa Valley Cabernets, with no pre-conceived notions or no idea of what it was.  In the end, this wine crushed other Cabernet heavyweights including triple digit-priced wines from Stag’s Leap, Raymond, Orin Swift, Alpha Omega, Doubleback, DeLille and more.

97 Points!  Incredible.  The Decanter team writes, “Roasted herb, coffee, black cherry and blackberry fruit compote on the nose. The palate is rich and concentrated but never heavy, with a lively acidity providing a sense of movement. Tannins are mighty and show that this will blossom with more time.”

That description actually resembles a few BV Georges de Latour wines I’ve tasted in the past….

The best part?  This wine is a steal.  Only $33.98 a bottle for a wine that works at this level of quality?  Amazing. look for this one to finish at or near the top of our top-selling Cabernets this year, from the great label to the heavy bottle, to what’s actually inside the bottle, this wine’s a winner on all counts.
