To all Wine Exchangers,
We’ve been on the carro della banda (bandwagon) for Felsina for a long time (two decades?).  We have recommended to folks during that time period to simply look for the letter ‘F’ (as in Felsina, Fontodi, and Fonterutoli) as a simple way to recommend top notch Chianti Classico to folks.  But the most consistent, and best price performer of the three has always been Felsina. We probably couldn’t even guess how many times we have written offers on Felsina’s wines.  They are always exceptional, always dependable and always relevant.  One of our previous emails opened with the phraseology, “there are three things certain in life...death, taxes, and great Felsina. “
There is no bluer chip in the Chianti world than this house at every level they participate.  The question has never been whether or not to buy, only how much we should buy.  It is almost always a substantial amount. It doesn’t seem to matter what Mother Nature throws at them, Franco Bernabei and the gang seem to turn it into something delicious by simply listening to what the vintage tells them.  Today our focus is on the top of their line, their spectacular single vineyard bottling, the Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 2015.
These guys rocked it in the highly-acclaimed 2015 vintage, as they should.  There are reasons.  At Fèlsina it is widely recognized that the esteem of Tuscan wines is based historically on the compelling character of wines produced primarily from Sangiovese.  The estate champions Sangiovese using only old “massale” selections (cultivated from cuttings from their top old vineyards) in their production.
The Rancia vineyard takes its name from the historic Rancia farmhouse, once a Benedictine monastery. Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga at elevations ranging between 1300 and 1400 feet, it has a fine southwest-facing exposure. The soil is composed of limestone-derived alberese classic to the Castelnuovo Berardenga area and of galestro marl in some areas. First vintage was 1983, and the wine is 100% Sangiovese.  The rest has been history.  You want some ‘hard numbers’?  In the 25 vintages that Wine Advocate has reviewed of the Rancia, none has ever scored below 92 points!
That is truly incredible, and epitomizes what people think of as a great track record.  Literally unmatched!
Wine Advocate hasn’t gotten to the 2015…yet, but there has been plenty of ‘chatter’ from other respected sources.  Starting with the now-stingy Wine Spectator, who wrote, “The fine cherry, plum, leather and spice flavors pick up accents of chocolate, earth and mineral as this red gathers steam. Builds to a firmly structured finish, where sweet fruit and dusty tannins linger. Drink now through 2028...94 points
Antonio Galloni writes for Vinous, The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is one of the most finessed young Rancias I have ever tasted. Silky, aromatically precise and nuanced to the core, the 2015 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. This is an impressive showing.  94-97 points." (count on the final number being on the higher end of that spectrum)
James Suckling weighed in with these notes, “Plenty of dark plums, black cherries, blackberry pie, cedar, tobacco and a hint of orange rind. There’s a real vitality to the palate, which is so well carved out by firm, savory tannins and seriously bright acidity. A chewy finish...95 points”
As for us, we found this to be a pretty sexy Chianti right out of the gate, and retasting it at a wine event recently confirmed our earlier impressions.  Among a serious lineup of Italian wines being presented this one shined, exuding layers of plush cherry and plum fruits and classically juicy underpinnings usually associated with wines from this southerly part of Chianti Classico, along with Felsina’s signature supple tannins.

An elite effort from an estate that is known for elite efforts, it is once again a must.  Simply put, Felsina did it yet again. And, as usual, given the pedigree and performance, the price looks like a bargain.
