To All Wine Exchangers,
Wine Detectives.
That’s kind of what we have to be once in a while.  Oftentimes, the true story of a property doesn’t pop out at you, the true significance of a wine doesn’t emerge, until you put the work in and figure it out for yourself.
Especially with BURGUNDY.  So many stories so many little patches of vineyards, so much history, and the Burgundians aren’t exactly forthcoming with information.
Which made our first foray onto René Cacheux’s website such a joy a few months ago when we were sent an offer on his wines from the importer.  His vineyards read like a where’s-where in Vosne Romanee, but we didn’t know just how where’s-where until we dug in.
Man, this guy has some dirt.  Let’s talk vineyards within the vineyard.
Let’s talk Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots.  Also considered one of Vosne’s top Premier Cru sites, it’s luckily sandwiched between Romanee St. Vivant and Echezeaux, two Grand Cru heavies.
A whole slew of top domaines own vineyards here, with the vast majority of these wines retailing for $120+.
And Cacheux has what may be two of the finest parcels in the vineyard.  The one parcel is tucked right around the corner from his Vosne Beaux Monts vines, also sharing a border with Echezeaux.  As Cacheux puts it, the vineyard is situated “50 centimeters” from Echezeaux.
50 centimeters.  If you’re not metric-friendly we did the conversion for you. 19.685 inches.  Yup, less than two feet. Can’t make this stuff up!
Which makes it almost disappointing that Cacheux’s other parcel of Les Suchots is, bummer, a whopping 3 meters from the border of Romanee St. Vivant.  Friends, in Burgundy that’s called a ‘road’. It doesn’t get any closer than that.
On the other side of the road? Domaine Leroy’s parcel of Romanee St. Vivant.  Current price of that wine? In a bad vintage, $3500+.  In a great year? Don’t ask.
Rene Cacheux’s Romanee St. Vivant-adjacent Vosne Romanee Les Suchots 1er Cru 2015?
$79.98.  Boom.
And there’s more.
Cacheux is lucky enough to own a tiny half-acre parcel of the Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux-Monts.  It’s one of Vosne’s most esteemed Premier Cru sites that counts, as owners (or vinifiers), no less than Jayer, Leroy, Noellat, Rouget, Dujac and Tremblay.  The least-expensive Beaux Monts among this group is $120+ with Leroy’s hitting the shelf at $1200+.
Everyone has their own little piece of the vineyard, but where your piece is within the vineyard also has a huge significance.
Cacheux’s parcel is located adjacent to the Echezeaux Grand Cru. That’s already a big deal.  But it gets better. His parcel is adjacent what many believe to be the finest pieces of Echezeaux, Les Cruots (or Vignes Blanches) and Les Loächausses.  The Gros family have a lock on Les Loächausses but the other parcels is split up among, yeah, you guessed it, Jayer, Rouget, Lamarche, Noellat, Comte du Liger-Belair and Grivot.
The Echezeaux from half those guys, in bad vintages, starts at $300 and head into the thousands.
Rene Cacheux’s Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015, from a great vintage, from 60-year-old vines right next door?
$79.98.  Boom. Again.
Both of these Vosne Romanee wines are made in the traditional Burgundian style, hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged 18 months in about 1/3 new oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Hell, even the guy’s Bourgogne Rouge Les Champs d'Argent 2015 comes from sterling dirt, in Vosne-Romanee just on the other side of the RN 74 from Vosne La Croix Blanche.  At $19.98 it’s like stealing.
Location, location, location. It comes up all the time in the wine world, and especially in Burgundy.  For the money, you won’t find better locations in Vosne Romanee than those of the supremely lucky (or smart) René and Gerald Cacheux.
As you can surmise, also in true Burgundian fashion quantities are somewhat limited though we did buy all that was available.
As we’re said with our previous Burgundy missives…
Do. Not. Miss. These. Wines.
