Montepulciano
Montepulciano is very widely planted in Italy, and it’s an approved varietal in at least 25 DOCs and DOCGs and is required to be the principal grape for the wines from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, but oddly there are no Montepulciano vines planted near the town of Montepulciano. Wines made from Montepulciano (it’s almost always blended with other grapes) are usually softer styled, with moderate acidity and soft tannins. They usually drink well for a few years.
