Merlot
Merlot is one of the most widely-planted varietals in the world, and is grown in nearly every winemaking region. While Merlot is often bottled on its own in Washington, California, Chile and other regions, in Bordeaux Merlot is the main component in the blended reds of the Pomerol and St. Emilion regions. There, Merlot is appreciated for its fleshiness when blended with firmer Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Depending on when it is harvested and the winemaker’s intent, Merlot can be made into softer easier-drinking wines for immediate consumption or deep, structured reds capable of aging.
