Peter Gago is making big strides at Penfolds and it is clear this wine was intended to be a statement as much as any of the more famous bottlings. It may be the best Koonunga we have ever tasted, certainly ranks as one of the best and already has garnered a 91 from Wine Advocate while selling for under eight bucks. Bright, tasty, packed with boisterous, clean, surprisingly character-filled fruit, if a wine merchant can’t sell this, he should consider another line of work. Getting enough of this will be a lot harder than getting rid of it.
