Zinfandel
Once thought to be an American original, Zinfandel is actually the Italian grape Primitivo. Zinfandel has been grown in California since about 1850, and just a little while later, it was the most widely-planted wine grape in California (but not any more). Many folks know the sweetish White Zinfandel, but red Zinfandels are what this grape is really about. Zinfandels are made in many styles, from dry to dessert, and the best red examples are full-bodied, with dark black fruits and spicy notes. The type of wine produced is greatly dependent on the local growing conditions, with hotter weather yielding jammier, richer wines.
