ESSAY 2009 CHENIN BLANC

  

This is a relatively new (as in the second release) project from the very busy Jose Conde, who is  involved in the Man and Stark Conde labels.  It’s predominantly Chenin Blanc from unirrigated, old bush vine plantings finished with a dollop of Viognier which gives it a touch more florality in the nose and presumably a little more flesh.  Whatever the alchemy involved, this is a bright, refreshing, zesty white with sleek lines and a nice punch of minerality to the peach and melon (the ‘brand’ notes suggest guava but we don’t eat a lot of those).  Nice cut to the finish, and attractive aromatics, this is a great all-purpose, fresh white that sees no wood and has just a hint of sweetness.  Super value.
