Carmenere was the next big thing several years ago. However, most Chilean vintners didn't know what to do with their "new" grape (they previously thought all the Carmenere in their vineyards was actually Merlot) yet wanted to market their new toy. An unfortunate turn of events, as most of the Carmenere was picked too early or at too high a yield, resulting in green, weedy, tannic wines. But this, this is Carmenere! Wine Advocate raves, "The nose offers up spice box, mineral, plum, black cherry, and blueberry. This is followed by a round, mouth-filling plush wine with ripe underlying tannin, complex, spicy flavors, excellent density, and a long, fruit-filled finish. Give it 2-3 years and drink it from 2012 to 2021."
