COUSINO MACUL 2006 CABERNET SAUVIGNON ANTIGUAS RESERVAS

  

Here is another winery that has a long history but has really picked up their game over the last few years aided by some modernization of their winery.  They already have a little bit of an advantage here because they experienced the ravages of phylloxera so the vines for this 100% Cabernet are all on their own root stocks.  The 2006 has a deep garnet color and interesting dusty notes to the blueberry and black cherry fruit.  There are appealing whiffs of sweet herbs and coffee in the mix as well, which make for a bit of complexity in this modestly priced Cab, and none of the bothersome peppercorn edge.  All in all this is the best version of Antiguas we have had  and the honest flavors and rather polished edge this has gives it an immediate appeal.  Good value.
